Default Silent Hunter III locks computer

Hey guys,

after a few years without playing SH3, I suddenly felt the need to dive into the sea again and sink some large ships with a torpedo strike I had never even played the Grey wolves expansion, so I felt extremely eager to pick up my game again. I have a laptop computer from a few years old with only an integrated Intel HD graphics card, but I'm pretty sure the game worked on it before and I also easily exceed the system specs. The game should thus work properly. My pc has windows 7 64 bit, 4GB of Ram and an intel i3-processor.
I installed the game from the disk (it's a version that has already been patched up to version 1.4) and tried to start the game without the Grey wolves expanion first. To my astonishment, the game immediatelly locks up my computer. Two times, the intro movie played for a few seconds before freezing, but most of the time I only see a black screen. The only solution is to reset the computer. I searched for solutions of the internet, but I didn't seem to find any similar cases. I thus assumed that the problem was related to my pc or to the windows version I was using. To check this, I tested the game on my father's desktop, which has better system specs and uses windows vista. The result was completely the same however. The pc just shows a black screen and the only remedy is to press the reset button. I have often encountered problems with video games, but normally I find similar cases on the internet. This time however, I am totally clueless. I hope that someone on this forum has a suggestion to solve my problem.

^A few years ago, It happened upon a similar problem, and I, I noted that it was the graphics card that could not cope with all the mods and GWX3,so the computer froze but there are similarities in what you describe, have ya many graphics-intensive mods?

And Welcome to SubSim Telstar

Thanks for the quick answer Vendor! Great news: I finally figured out how to make the game work after two days. I normally install games on an external hard drive (F) in order not to burden my C-drive. Apparently, SHIII doesn't like that. I had the bright idea to intall the game in the default folder and it works now. I find this pretty annoying, since I don't like to install games on my internal hard drive and I really hesitate to burden it even more with rather heavy mods like GWX3. If anyone would know a way to by-pass these restrictions that SH3 seem to have, then I would be glad to try them out. Games normally work fine when I install them on a location that I choose myself. Anyway, I'm off to the Atlantic ocean now

Welcome Aboard Matey and pleased to learn you are sorted.

GWX was designed to run on computers using the same specs as that needed to run stock SH3.

I have two internal hard drives: C and D.

Win7 is running on C drive but Sh3 is installed in D. So all is well.

Thanks, I really appreciate the warm welcome on the forum.

I have decided to install some mods after all. If I am going to start again with this game, I'd better do it right.

Did you run the batch file? If you did try this: run the un-install part of the batch, then delete these files: SHIII.sdb, SP2 Rez fix uninstall.bat, SP2 Rez fix.bat. They are for using with XP. The remaining two, d3d9.cfg & d3d9.dll, you leave in your SH3 directory. Open the config file and set it to the resolution you want. It is not meant for wide screen resolutions, but rather in a 4:3 res. I can tell you it works in Vista x64. I have it set at 1400 x 1050. Good Luck! and welcome to SubSim!

Still doesn't work
But I think I'd better continue this discussion in the appropriate thread.
