This was in the local Los Angeles news. The slain POW was a resident of Los Angeles and his widow, now in her 90s waited for his return:

There was a movie with Betty White about something along the same lines!

'The Lost Valentine'

That movie brought tears to my eyes both times I've watched it.
This story brings the tears also.
