Default Erkennungshandbuch

Does anyone know if the Erkennungshandbuch that the Kreigsmarine used in real life listed the known weapons and ASW capabilities of the ships? I know in the "Enemy Below" the U-boat WO looked up the Ship Class and read off the ships weapons systems, just wondering if that was realistic and worth tryiing to mod.

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. My guess would be that the book contained the basics, and as they learned of new Allied technology the passed the information to the Kaleuns in bulletins. That way new information would be available quickly and there wouldn't be the need to update the books all the time.

Of course I could be wrong.

I usually am.

You're probably right in this case, it makes sense. I just get tired of trying to remember which escorts are armed with what.

My copy of "u-boot commanders handbook", mentions it is just one of many volumes of reference given to the Kaluens. Some tactical, some procedural, technical, and even legal. That said, it contains nothing but tactics.
Outa luck there, even worse, it says you were expected to have all pertinent info memorized.

Thanks, I knew they made it look too easy in Hollywood.

a suprising amount of information about warships was available and published privately before and during World War Two. I have a privately published book that contains quite a bit of information. The US Navy recognition manuals are also quite detailed. I have seen several German "pochet books" on foreign fleets but do not have any in my collection. My recollection is that some armament info was included. I am confident that the official German Navy manual included the latest intelligence on enemy capabilities. Just like our own manuals, not always 100% up to date or accurate, but quite comprehensive in scope. Joe S

And if that didn't work, they could always look in the latest Jane's.
