Default Shallow water sucks when the weather is nice.

Well I was on a patrol in the East China Sea when I spotted a nice juicy convoy of twelve ships escorted by a Minesweeper and a Destroyer. Problem was I had only 210 feet of water underneath me and the sea was as smooth as a baby's skin. If I had me some of the electric torps I would have risked an attack on the Destroyer as the Minesweeper didn't have any depth charges on her but as it was still 1942 I had the Mark 14's and decided it wasn't worth it. I was able to send a contact report before I got out of dodge though.

Wait until dark and do a night surface attack. Send some 14's from long range if needed, about 7000 yards, then get out of there. The escorts will come looking, but you'll be gone. That should open a flank where you can attack with the escorts out of the way.

I was planning on doing that but since I only had SD radar it was hard to keep tabs on the convoy and I ended up losing track of it.

I would have made an attack, unless there were more problems.

Launch from 3,000 or 4,000 yds. and scoot, head for deeper water, or like Armistead said, track until nightfall. If the minesweeper had no asw weapons, one DD shouldn't be that dangerous.

Of course it depends on how much you've invested in your career, too.

I don't trust the Mark 14's enough to try and take a shot at the DD. Plus they always seem to spot them and are able to turn away from the before the torps even have a chance. I've also never hit a DD unless it was a "down the throat" shot with anything other then the electric torp.

I meant use the mk. 14 to torpedo a target ship, not a DD. I hardly ever shoot at them, unless their standing still.

I agree about the AI ships spotting torps. It's rediculous. I was using a test mission, and just happened to discover merchies can "see" a torpedo coming, on a dark, moonless night. I could barely see the ship to target it, much less a torpedo in the water. It's like they can smell them 500 yds away.

I never really saw that before, as I don't use map contacts in career play. With map-contacts and the attack map, it becomes very obvious.

I'm guessing you are using TMO? Then it would pay to be more careful. Don't let my comments bug you, sometimes I take a chance, and wind up sorry I did.

I use TMO+RSRD and occasionally use Traveller's Mod as well so the ships spotting torps easily is something i'm used to. Still I find that most merchants won't spot the torps until there 500 yards away if you fire them from a 1000+ They seem to not spot them them if they're fired closer then that.

Here is a hit at knocking out Escorts either coming directly bow on or stern on.

You can put an off set on the fish before firing. So if you wanted the fish to come off at 5 or ten degrees it will. If there is only one or two I will begin my attack on my target vessels. If they see me it normally is to late for them to stop my initial run normally on two ships from the bow. Now I play the German side mostly and use the G7es so it quite easy to take out escorts but if your running the american side simply get your brave on and leave the scope up.

Watch the escort as it is coming down on you from the stern. She sees your scopes and 90% of the time will run a zig zag pattern towards you know that her speed even with the turns will run you over soon enough.

Zig, zag, zig, zag, ... port, starboard, port, starboard. Put your offset 3 degrees in the opposite direction of travel and if you time her turn correctly she will turn into your fish not away. I normally do this within 800 yards and make sure the door is already open to get the fish out without added wait time.
