He was an explorer of not only height, but depth as he had a very successful post NASA career in the Navy deep diving programs.

I was twelve years old when Carpenter made his flight. What entertains me is that the article uses the name he commonly used, Scott, which was his middle name. I wonder if the writer even knew that his first name was Malcom? Another who used his middle name was Leroy Gordon Cooper. And then there was the man who refused to use his given name at all: Virgil Ivan Grissom.

They were all my boyhood heroes.

My son's middle name was Scott and everyone in my family called him Scotty for many years till it stuck.

We are born, we live, we die ... no mystery in this

the only question left unanswered is, "Will we meet again on the other side"?
