Default Trouble getting SHIII to run on Windows 7/Steam

I'm having quite a bit of difficulty getting SHIII with GWX to run on Windows 7 without resorting to setting both my monitors to 1920x1200. When I initially try to launch the game I get a "Cannot initialize 3d engine" error, and anytime I try to launch it after that Steam gives me a "Failed to start game, app already running". I've read that there are issues with trying to run SHIII in resolutions above 1440x900, so I tried a widescreen mod, but I get the same errors. I'm pretty much at a loss here, so I'd be very grateful for any help.

Have you started the game in admin mode?

Yep, and in WinXP compatibility mode, neither work.

I tried installing SH3 to a stand-alone directory in C, and got the same 3d engine error, and after installing GWX it won't even boot up, nothing happens.

If you have a nvidia graphic board make sure to have

1. set the game resolution different to the desktop resolution

2. set the monitor frequency to 60 not 59 Hz, double check that...

report back, please

I did this and I think I found the root of the problem. I'm running two monitors, one a 16:9 display at 1920x1080, and the other a 16:10 display at 1920x1200. When I set my 16:10 display to 1080, the game runs just fine.
