not even a radio or a camera or SD card slot.

For me, I think that's an understatement.

For my sports medicine job, it's my primary phone. I don't have an office of my own, so it takes the place of a computer, especially when on the field. The camera feature is extremely useful also. During bad weather, I also use it to follow the weather radar. Thankfully, I at least get some of the cost reimbursed.

It's my primary contact number for my part time job as a fire instructor. Useful for quick access to information.

When working small events at Kentucky Speedway, it comes in handy to make calls, browse the internet, etc. during down time. Major events, I don't have time.

On top of all that, I use it for regular social calls also. I give that number to people instead of my home number.

I will add that at night, It goes on the charger and not in the bedroom unless I have reason to expect a call.

When I was working as a firefighter, it was a convenience and on rare occasion, I used it while on scene for fire dept business.

I remember when they first came out I got a big bag phone. Using them back then was fairly expensive, easy to go over your minutes. My problem was girls then. I recall being in shock at $2-300 cell bills. I bet many of us have 40K plus in cell phone use over the last 20 years.

How did we ever survive without them....

Much like Steve, I hardly make any calls, and those are short.
But the internet is my window to the universe, to the point it replaces tv altogether.
However I always have it with me. That is the purpose of it being mobile, I think.
I only replace them when they become unusable, and always go for the simplest models, for lots of reasons, mainly for longer battery life and reliability. I find smart phones to be somewhat more prone to failure, from both hardware and software problems.

I think younger people become more easily enslaved by phones because of their natural need to socialize intensively, while us older folks prefer some golden peace and quiet.

But I've known grown ups who became totally enslaved by the "gotta have the latest model that just came out" syndrome, buying a new phone almost every other month, without being sure they can pay their apt rent at the end of the month. Sad.

I am not a slave to my phone. I use it at work [because they provided it, and I just pay for personal calls] but having a cell phone means getting calls from people at any time of day, on any day, just because they can call you. I do not often respond when at home because I am not paid outside of work hours.

My old phone is gathering dust in a draw where I left it four years ago.

I miss the days of having a pager. If it went off it was an emergency and meant something.

A cell phone is a useful tool for travel, especially with rail/airport delays, and I have it when driving. And no need to carry around coins for a payphone. (Where does Superman get changed now?)

However, if I go to a bar with friends then I want to have a drink and talk to them face to face, not sit there talking on the phone or texting other people.

The program talked about ordinary people that doesn't need to answer the phone in the middle of the night were they supposed to be asleep.

I just purchased the second cellphone of my life this past January. Before that, I haven't had one since the late 90s. Yup, I went all that time w/o owning a cellphone. I only use mine for text or talk. Takes me too darn long to text, so I don't use it for that often. I'm not a big fan of phone conversations to begin with. I prefer more social, personal, face-to-face, discussions. So, no, I'm not a slave to my cellphone.
