Replacing Officer faces with own pics ?

Can i replace the officer faces icons with my own pictures of friends etc ? I've seen the Das Boat crew mod so it looks possible, but could someone tell me basically how to do it? Size file type etc. Tried the search but didn't find what i was looking for yet.
