Default Sound Mods

I just upgraded my computer so I had to reload everything. I'm looking for a good sound mod to add to TMO and RSRDC. I had OTC installed and really liked the new sounds from the crew, GQ and scope going up and down. I did try Pacific for a short time but didn't find much difference with TMO and RSRDC.

So if you guys can recommend a sound mod and tell why you like it, it would really help.

Keep in mind sound mods can overwrite many of the files you may like. They're several sound mods in the mods DL site, DL them and open them and listen to the different sounds, find ones you like and make your own mod. Many of us go all searching the web for sounds we like and use those. You can find several sound files and use a program like Wav Studio to combine or mix them. Just pay attention to the sounds parameters and try to match each one close, if you're not careful sounds can overrun each other and get stuck in the loop.

Most excellent advice! That is exactly how the best sound mods were born in the first place. No matter what you download, you'll always find something you like better somewhere else.

yep, the sound mod i put together was a collection of old sound mods from v1.2, v1.3, and v1.4 as well as a few others i found as generic sound files.

i think it was something like 6 or 7 mods i went and compared each sound file one at a time and picked the one i thought sounded the best.

often i found the ones in the game sounded better then those that someone had put into a sound mod i was looking into so never accept whats given to you but check each sound out yourself and compare it to stock or TMO if thats your main mod

if you like most of a sound mod but dont like some sounds in it then just delete them, it doesnt hurt anything and then the game will just use the stock sounds or TMO sounds (if TMO is installed) for those

You can try the Poul Sound mod, it´s good for me. Also the little Webster´s sound mods are a must.

Regards.

Pouls has a few issues with TMO. I know he made a long death sequence, all the sounds that take place when you go below crush depth and die. Problem is it activates less than TMO's crush depths, probably because he set it for stock or other mods that use less crush depths. Also is very German in voice and sounds.

Thanks for the advise guys. I think I'll try Websters to see how that sounds and if it's not what I like Ill probably go back to OTC. I really don't want to start changing things on my own next thing you know I'll have some type of game issue. You guys know what's compatable or not and there's nothing worse then just starting out and getting into the game and then having to restart because of something that causes a problem. For me OTC has some sounds that I like but I only played a short time before I upgraded and had to reload the game. With JSGME it's easy to just remove the mod if it's not what I like.

with the sound mod all you are doing is replacing sounds so click on the sound and windows media player will play it (they only last a few seconds) and you delete what you dont like from the mod. if you want to add a better sound then you just copy it into the mod folder with the other sounds to replace the one thats already there.

you cant "break" the mod by doing this so all you are doing is customizing it to your taste.

you are doing nothing to the game files until the mod is installed and jsgme does that for you so you cant mess that up but even if you do somehow find a way to mess up the game files its very easy to fix and undo.

thats whats so darn great about these games is you can screw them up as much as you want and start over again in seconds no harm no foul.

Hey thanks Webster. I thought you had to change the whole mod. That's why I was asking what others liked. Just one more quick question, as with other mods, do you have to make the changes while in port?

there is no certain answer as the game tends to be quirky about that but as a rule of thumb, mods that just change out image files like textures can be done anytime and AFAIK sound files can be done anytime as well.

changes that will definately cause issues are the ones with sim, zon, and dat files.

mods that just change text files are usually safe to do anytime but i think it depends on what the text file is for

if you arent wanting to risk it then make a copy of the games "data" folder and the sh4 folder in your documents before you do it then if it doesnt work you can replace them with your backup copies and your back like it never happened and your career should be safe.

this should work but its always best to wait until you get to a port, remember it doesnt have to be your home port, just any port

and remember if you ever add your own sounds to the game they should be very close to the same length as the stock file plays and it HAS TO BE named exactly the same as the game file it replaces or jsgme will install it but it wont be used to replace it since the game only looks for and plays the sounds based on the file name the game is looking for. same goes for image files, they should be named and sized exactly the same as the image they are to replace.

I would caution against changing text files. Config files (.cfg) are text files and IIRC, I have had problems when changing those out of port. Best to limit changes to sound files (.ogg or .wav) when out of port. These can be changed anytime.

I find that the fewer mod changes I make when out of port, the less likely I am to get strange in-game behavior.

There is at least one mod (RUIM) which can only be installed succesfuly at the start of a career. (Please don't ask me how I know this. :-P)

Thanks for the help guys. To be on the safe side I'll make any changes in port. Right now for me the sounds in OTC are pretty cool. I only played one patrol with TMO and RSRDC as the main mods. I just started another career so I was looking for a little change.
