Default weird training mission

This is my first post in a forum ever. Been a lurker for awhile. Anyway, been having a great time getting to know how to play SHIII and have enjoyed all the hints and tips from this forum. Had a strange occurance happen with the convoy training mission. The armed trawler attacks and destroys the escort! The armed trawler is also very hard to shake. I don't hear any active sonar pinging yet it always seems to know where I am. Even silent running at 100m. I try stopping and waiting but he just circles above. Any one else have this trawler act so weird? Though about surfacing and pelting him with the deck gun but I've been anxious about starting a career.

Its a well known bug that escorts some times attack each other. If one escort accidentaly dammages another it will be declared renegade and all other ships will start attacking it.

It doesn't happen often though, I haven't yet seen any enemy warships fighting each other.

While I wouldn't try this against a real convoy I passed that exam by destroying both escorts first. Sneak up on the DD and torp it, then either ignore the trawler or sink it (it's mostly harmless, I sank it with the deck gun).
In a career mode convoy attack you shouldn't bother attacking the escorts though.

Thanks, I had heard about enemy ships attacking one another. I am more perplexed by not being able to shake the trawler. It stayed on me like glue - w/o sonar silent running etc. I won't be having any fun with the game if the AI always acts like this.

I once had an armed trawler shoot at me when I wasn't looking, but when I dived he rolled right past me without a clue. He was no problem to elude underwater. I'm using RUB; maybe that makes a difference?

wow ive never seen enemy escorts attack each other. They are pretty elite when hunting together. Ive noticed one is just sitting there pinging while he other hits my position and then the other stops pinging and hits a guessed position next. Pretty awesome escorts sometimes. But sometimes they are also plain dumb, i sank 4 ships in a convoy without them even reacting and actively chasing me. I stuck on that convoy well but torp failures and misses only allowed 4 sinking
