Default New Campaign -- Lost

I'm kinda lost on a new campaign.

Do I need to do anything other than set sail?

And I hear a lot of talk about crew rotation. What's that all about?

HI.

Navigate:
First looka at your orders i.e witch square to be patrolled for 24 hrs. Find it on the map & plot a course using waypoints on the nav-map. Set sail like "full speed ahead" and wait until you have stable speed. Bring up the navigator menue. Check the left box and the nav-officer will tell you maximum range at current speed. This should be at least over two times the maximum distance to the last waypoint. Take care also for leaving enough diesel for 24 hrs patrol inside the square. Check the maximum range at regular intervals especially if something has occurred like finding a target on route and chasing it at max speed(wahnsinniger fahrt voraus).

Always have a backup plan for replenishing fuel :|\ , either friendly port or Milkkow. Ending up with no fuel is not going to be of help.

Crew:
Put crew away from torpedo rooms/repair during transit since staying in these areas can wear them out fast. Rotation is to take care of the crew to keep them rested. There is an ongoing discussion on this matter since the stock-fatigue model is not good (BAD ).
There are mods but they are far from perfect. Take a look at "Der Teddy Bar":s new topic today you will get a good picture on the situation.

Now you can speed up time a little (careful) and look out for aircraft/destroyers and of course targets of opportunity.

Let the radioman play the grammophone, check out your boat etc...
Practice doing "Crash dives"/normal dives and time them to let you get a hunch on the sub/crew behaviour. Take regular depth readings when in shallow water (<80 m) to avoid slamming into the bottom during crash dives.

During these diving excercises stay suberged, cut e-motors and practice using the hydrophone (press H). You have a chance to pick up ships earlier than your AI-operator.

I dont think you need more than this now since you will get experience during play. (Thats the fun thing with SHIII after all ).

Happy hunting herr Kaleun
