I started using a free program called Fraps. What it does is show the frame rate in real time superimposed in the corner of the running game. By monitoring the FR, I have a much better understanding of what is happening as far as the game slowing down and icon stuttering, and am able to adjust the time compression rates to more efficient settings when using it.

I think is another way to check the FPS if you press Control + F8
