Default SH5 - do I want it?

I loved SH3 and join this community when I was playing it, long ago. When SH4 came out, I refused to purchase it due to it being connect to STEAM as I have had too many bad experiences with Mr. STEAM and will not use any product with it - period - so you can sticks and stones me or throw crap at me but no, no, never.

I miss my sub sim and was really pleased to find out that they had released SH5 in March 2010...I just found out today. I realize that it is tied to Ubisoft server also and one must be connected to the internet to even play it. I have another game like this called Rise of Flight and it hasn't turned out too bad but they are a small company while Ubi is big. I realize there could be problems...

So, Questions...
1. March 2010 to now is a lot of time to work out bugs and improve it with patches etc... How is it? I know, big open question...just your personal opinions will do.
2. What problems does it have that are induced by the internet connection?

It's been a long time since I was in the Radio Room, a real long time and I hope you all have some good news for me like "Buy it now, Rick!" but give your honest opinion...

Rick

It depends on what you want. If you want to walk around inside the sub, see the best looking graphics ever, play a stilted, artificial campaign that has nothing whatever to do with a real u-boat kaleun's experience and fight with Ubisoft over your right to play the game, then SH5 is your bag.

If you want to sail in a Type II or Type IX and experience all the sights and sounds available then SH3 will still have to do.

I have to agree with Steve on this. The best part of SH5 is it's graphics... they are top notch with mods installed.

Sh5 is different but it's not hard to get used to. Do NOT buy from Steam if you decide to get it. Look around and get the boxed SH5, that's the only way to buy it. Amazon.com will probably best the best place to get it.

If you do decide to to with Amazon, be sure to go through the link at the bottom of this page. That way Onkel Neal and Subsim will get a piece of the action.

And the online part has been absent for the last year!

My two-penneth says buy it - it's dirt cheap, get it through the Subsim link to Amazon and this site gets a percentage with no extra costs to you.

Just make sure you mod it, plenty of threads and videos to help you choose.

Your barking up the wrong tree. SH4 didn't release on steam. If you get the gold edition on disk, it won't have any DRM whatsoever. Now, you can buy SH4 on steam (I think), but is it a steam only release? No. Is it saddled with any DRM? No.

Now SH5 however, has Ubisofts version of steam. It's a wannabe copycat thing. Some of your big name publishers are jumping on the steam bandwagon and making steam looking REALLY good. Ubisoft came out with Uplay, and EA came out with Origins. Anyway, SH5 is saddled with Uplay. While some folks will maintain that Ubisoft removed the DRM, thats not true. All Ubisoft did was add an "offline mode" to Uplay. Something which steam has had all along. Before the "offline mode" was added, you had to have a 100% solid internet connection at all times. While that is no longer the case, it still saddled with Uplay, which is in all actuality, is worse then steam.

My experience has been the opposite. UbiSoft's DRM gave me fits, but I have never had a problem with Steam in all the years and all the titles that I have used with it.

Steam, believe it or not, is the best DRM of its kind, and installs the least amount of hooks into your system. (Try origin, hahaah) Search around this forum and see how many uplay login issues you find. I've not had one, not one single solitary problem with steam, and ive used it for a few years now, and I own and play more games then i'll admit to on it.

To be fair, i resisted steam for the longest time. But the sad fact is, the PC games selection is very slim at any brick and mortar store. The console selection is HUGE. Not to mention the steam sales are pretty good. you can't argue with 75% off a game purchase.

Thanks for all the information. I guess I will give it a try; however, I did not see too much praise for it but SH3 is getting a bit old so...

One last question: Does uPlay (UbiSoft's DRM) have offline play? Or, do I have to stay connected to the internet the entire time. Some games (I think Rise of Flight) have Offline play but you must be connected to the internet to start it but then it's no longer required. Just want to understand what I'm getting myself into. I'm in Central Asia so nothing is easy...

Sorry about raising the Steam issue. I didn't mean to start a 'Steam debate' but my luck with Steam has been zero and like I said, I don't use it - period. In truth, I stopped all games with this type of DRM and have been playing only Paradox games the past few years (DRM free), they're heavy strategy games, big learning curve, quite complex, good stuff. Thanks for all the comments and if I do buy I will get it via Amazon via SubSim as suggested. Thanks! - Rick

"And the online part has been absent for the last year!"

What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that uPlay is no longer required if you're playing offline? Or does it just verify the game and then it's no longer needed?

I'm looking at the box on Amazon and it says "A permanent internet connect is required to play the game" not so?

You need internet connection the first time you play it. After that you can place it in offline mode.
