The key is hardcoded - iirc.
Did some research a few years ago and couldn't find a solution for my old laptop.

Don't call it HUD - call it GUI.

Okey, Then I need to buy an external numpad for my laptop.
In game when you press f1 to take up the key list it says hide/show HUD

If you have a laptop, you should have an Fn key with the Numpad Delete key mixed in with the period key. There is also a program out there which allows you to change key bindings (I personally got rid of the nasty "Enter fires a torpedo") so you can pick something more accessible.

You can use your existing laptop num pad to toggle the interface on/off.

FN+F11 (or a marked key close to F11) will switch the orange keys to their alternate num pad function, often especially marked in blue colour or sometimes at the front side of the keys themself.

One of the blue squared keys will toggle the interface on/off - can't remember which one it was.

Oops. I misunderstood.

I just looked and can't find that one either. I've never looked for it before as I only have a desktop and never needed to change it.

Sorry.

Why?

What laptop do you run? Do you have a special keyboard?

Or is it something like this?

Ah - quite close.

Well - I guess we all learned to our cost occasionally.
At least this laptop was not too expensive.

This is a strange keyboard to my eyes, never seen it before.
Not sure if a USB num pad will do the trick with this laptop model. Try to verify before your investment.

EDIT: you may want to try this first:
http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/X...tonControl.htm

It's a special driver for your mouse and capable to simulate keystrokes.
You could create a second layer activated with i.e. ALT and hit a mouse key to send the DEL key stroke of the num pad to SH3 toggling the interface on/off.
