Hi,
I bought a new laptop while ago and now I would like to try how SH4 & U-Boat Missions run on it. I just wanted to ask you if you could give me some heads up to what kinda performance should I wait for these specs? Naturally I'm aiming to play native resolution and all graphical settings maxed. Intel i7-720QM 1,6Ghz Ati Mobility Radeon 5870M 1GB 6GB RAM Windows 7 64-bit And what kinda performance could I get with Silent Hunter 5? Thanks. And just for the end, is SH4 playable after patches or should I mod it somehow to get more pleasant gameplay experience? Let's just say that I'm kinda newbie when it comes to submarine simulations. From the stats you list I'd say you can run SH4 full throttle. Ubi says that SH4 isn't supported for laptops, but many people run it on them and say they have no problems.
You will want to pick up one of the supermods (RFB, TMO, FOTRS, OM) and will likely end up wanting more, but for now just play a few missions and enjoy the game.

In my very humble opinion, I've always shied away from laptops, as far as playing SHIV was concerned. This has been because laptops just don't have the room for the high performance, dedicated, graphics cards found on their desktop counterparts. However, in your particular instance, you appear to have a new high-end laptop (something I once would've thought unobtainable). The thing about dedicated graphics cards is that they free up system resources for the CPU, even if just a little bit.
Now, you certainly seem to have the CPU and RAM to cover all the bases. My concern is your graphics card. As of 2010, the Ati Mobility Radeon 5870M card was one of the fastest (if not the fastest) laptop card available. That however, depends upon the card's RAM data transfer rate, which you do not specify. I'll quote an excerpt from notebookcheck.net: "The memory interface of the Mobility 5870 is composed of two 64 bit wide controllers leading to a 128 bit memory bus that can access up to 1024 MB of DDR3 or GDDR5 memory (or 512 MB GDDR3). If (G)DDR3 is used by the laptop vendor, the performance of the 5870 will become bottlenecked by a noticeable degree." http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mob...0.23073.0.html This of course, does not preclude you from being able to run SHIV, since everything else, potentially even your GPU, appear to be able to handle the load. The best way to find out is to fire the game/sim up and take her for a test drive. You can also check if your system is up to the task at the following link: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ Good luck! We can use all the help we can get in the PTO. ![]()
