Luck or lucky
While on my way to patrol off Japan. While en-route my sonar operator said warship closing medium speed, so I went up to Periscope Depth and decided to take a look round. Then I saw it, the IJN Yamato, that ship was huge, it was heading to the Leyte or Luzon. I immediately accessed the situation, I thought "if I sink that ship, it will be a huge hit to Japan's moral, and Economy" as a lot of steel was used in her construction. So I made up my mind, I Stalked Yamato, for the better part of two days, sending contact reports at night then submerging. At 0000 hours on the third day the firing solution was as perfect as I could get it, I fired 6 torpedoes, reloaded, but alas it was not needed, for the Yamato sunk I have no Idea why it did, as I've seen Yamato swallow all of the torpedoes in my hold. By this time the Destroyers were very mad, and I was nearly sunk, before I ordered a crash dive hard port rudder, flank speed.
I then went and sunk 5 ships out of a convoy of 10 . By this time I had exhausted all of my Torpedoes so I retired to Peal Harbor. Full Realism-but with event and external cameras 1942 January Last edited by ARC0001Orar; 01-30-12 at 07:45 PM. |

If you're playing stock some of the damage zones on the Y are a little weak compared to mods that corrected them, simply if you hit the right zones it may go down in 6, with mods usually takes 8-12 depending on your torp placement.

You were lucky to have her cross your path in the first place, lucky to find her steaming at a slow enough speed to allow you to gain a firing position (even if it took 2 days), and luckier still that your shots hit her in a vital spot.
Never the less, all the luck in the world will not help the unprepared or the undetermined. Congratulations on sinking the Y, and congratulations on surviving. ![]()

You can safely get near Japan on the surface, just slow down time compression and pay attention to your radars. Any air radar contact, get below the surface fast. If you take any damage, get away from Japanese waters, because your inability to dive will seal your fate.

You can hang around a mere 60 miles away from Tokyo Bay as long you are cautious. There is an island on the map just below Tokyo it is called Oshima Island you can hang around this island and more or less just wait for convoys to come to you.In WWII sub crews actually used the island to practice ranging the radar.Oshima Island is about 61 miles from Tokyo bay so if you running a patrol in the area you might get within 45 miles but you will be a major Japanese shipping lane and an ideal night time hunting ground.
