Default About fuel usage

I play stock 1.5 and I have read where some run out of fuel.

I can say for a fact that if you get holed sometimes it will cause fuel to leak.

Once a tanker surprised me coming out of a fog bank and hit me with a well-aimed shot. I lost half my fuel--quick. It was late in the war, so I made it to a gas station, they filled up my tanks, and right away my fuel level dropped down to half a tank. I had to hit every stop on the way to refuel but I was lucky to make it back to base.

I think planes or ships can do it also with their smaller weapons although not such a massive loss, but enough to cause you possibly not to make it home.

Haven't tried mods, can't figure on how to install them, but I have been through 7 wars in stock and this has happened 3 times in all.

Something to consider.

Yes, that would certainly be bad news. It would be even worse in RL, since you would be leaving an oil slick wherever you went.

7 wars in stock?!
It's definitely time to install some mods. It's not that hard at all either. Just DL JSGME and install it into your SHIV root folder. It should create it's own "Mods" folder, but if it doesn't, create one yourself. Then, unzip any mods into that "Mods" folder and then start up JSGME. You'll see the mods in the JSGME left side panel. Select the mods and use the arrow arrow button to install them into the JSGME right side panel. Voila, you're finished and ready to play with mods.

I have tried to do that but I am not doing something right.

How do I start the game? Do I still need my disk in my computer? Can I make a shortcut?

Believe me, I want to try out the mods but I know little about computers.

I am old. I remember AM radio. Rabbit ears on the TV--black and white at that.

I need a course for apes to understand, all these buttons and stuff!!

DL ? What's that? Root Folder?? What?? Unzip any mods?? Huh?? How do I start up JSGME and what is it anyway? I have it installed from way back but where it went I have no idea.

Oh well, at least stock sure beats pinball, remember those?

Well, no use in being snippy, dude.

I wasn't raised on computers.

Everything I know about them I taught myself, and I know many things about other areas you probably don't know about. So there.

Now that you got that off your chest, take a deep breath and go here; http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/sof...cts-jsgme.html
and get the tool you'll need to install MODs. Read the documentation that comes with it and get started. Then come back here with more specific questions if you have difficulties. The guys/gals on this forum are most helpful as I can attest as they brought me along from a newbie over two years ago. You got your hands on a great game and the MODs make it even better.

I must offer an apology for my outburst, yet to me it was uncalled for.

But moving on, I thank you for your help. I am sure I have done most things correctly, I have probably left out a small step or two.

I will give it another go.

I thank you for your help, and thanks for the link.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be snippy, by a long shot. I was, instead, frustrated. My typing skills aren't nearly even considered average and the thought of typing out a long explanation was too daunting.
I taught myself everything I know about computers too. As far as knowing more than me about other things, well, join the club. Most people know more about other things than I do. I still haven't (exactly) figured out what it is that I do know.

Trust me, when I am trying to be snippy, there will be no doubt about it.

Breadcatcher,

You can, if you run out of fuel from damage, or not paying attention to remaining fuel, and distance needed to travel, do a little cheat. Especially since the stock game doesn't have any way to facilitate refueling aside from going to your home port.

Save the game at your present point.

Exit the game.

Go to My Documents, (should be a desktop icon), or accessible through the Start Menu.

In My Documents, look for the SH4 Folder, and double click it to open the folder.

Next, double click the Data Folder.

Next, double click the CFG Folder.

Next, double click the SaveGames Folder.

There will be anywhere from one to a multiple list of folders in there with a bunch of 0s and a last number of higher value. The one you want, is the last one in the list, as it is yor most recent saved game.

Double click that folder. (the most recent save)

In there the file you want, is the GameplaySettings.cfg file. Double click to open it. You may get a message from windows to choose a program to open the file, just use Notepad, or Wordpad from the list. Whichever you prefer. There is also a little checkbox asking if you want to use that program to open all files like it on your computer. You can either leave it empty, or click the box to check it. Whatever you wish.

Close to the top, you will find LimitedFuel=(either True or False will be after the = sign). If it says True, just erase the word True, and type in the word False. Save the change, by clicking on the File button to the top left, and click save, or just close the file, the X on the top right, and click save when it asks you what you want to do.

Restart your game, and go home.

Would be nice, if you could radio for a tow from a close passing ship, or another sub, but that wasn't added in there.

One thing to consider, with the supermods, as the war progresses, at least in TMO, when the Americans start to advance in the island hopping campaigns to regain the Pacific, you will see little icons on the map pop up in bays and harbors. You can refuel at these locations, and rearm. If your boat has little to damage, and you want to go back out for more, you can. If your boat really neds to go back for extensive repairs, you can do that.

One thing to, is if you do have damage to your batteries, go to your ingame menu bar, accross the bottom of the screen, there are icons to the leftside. The one in the corner, first one on the left, is the captain's icon. Make sure that the batteries aren't set to recharge. This will keep you from burning up fuel unecessarily. Once the batteries are repaired, you can reset it to charge them. Especially if in Japanese waters.

If in friendly waters, it's not a worry. Friendly planes won't indiscriminantly attack you, like their RL counterparts would. Same with friendly warships.

If the repairs for the batteries don't work, or are taking a long time in enemy waters, turn off the recharge icon. Set a crewman to the AA gun(s), and be prepared to do a lot of dodging of aircraft. Use your fuel on the surface as economically as possible, but when planes show up, go to flank speed, and wait for them to start their dive on you. Try to keep to one side ot the other, so you can turn into them, hard left or right rudder. Your relatively quick speed with tight turning ability make you a very difficult target to hit. Best thing, is to save if you pick up a plane on radar, incase you need to practice it.

Hope this helps! I tried to explain it as simply as possible. I too leearned most everything on my own too, and now I know enough to be really dangerous to software and hardware. Well, until I figure out what does what.

Well jldjs, thanks to your link I have now installed Jsgme.

I don't have any mods yet, I have heard of quite a bit of them in reading here and am not sure which to use. Can I install more than one?

I'll try to find them and figure out how to install, about all I play is SH4, I have SH3, but I had rather sink Japanese.

Is there an RFB mod? I have also heard of steam, and the one where the Japanese run the slot.

I also heard the destroyers are not as polite as in stock.

I really appreciate your help.

My path to using MODs started with TMOwTw v1.7. It gives you the eye candy of TMO but the tameness of stock. Got alot of learning on this one . Then the switch to TMO was easier. Follow the threads on this forum and others and you'll learn about other MODs. RSRDC is a great addition to TMO for realism onslme the Pacific battles. FOTRS is also good and easier than TMO. Never tried RFB, but will when I tire of these, though I haven't yet in two years.
