Without reading the article im going to guess:

a.) Cost of gasoline
b.) Internet (in the forms of social networking ala facebook, and online gaming in general).

Neither of which was a factor 15 to 19 years ago.

Now im going to go back and read the article and see if i was right.

Hi,
here in Germany for the young generation it has become uncool in a way to drive a car, at least if it's not a hybrid or electrical driven craft.
Wasted resources, billions hungering and a rising CO2 level makes a lot of them in a way despise the SUVs and Mercedes and BMW limousines.
But it's foremost the young and intellectual part, like software engineers and students who think that way.
It is really a shame, the nation who in a way invented a motor-driven car is not capable of using and developing alternative concepts, my 27-year old car needs less gasoline than the newest "Eco" car, this is really ridiculous. Not that there IS any hybrid german car you can buy at all.

As well we have ecological zones here in cities, where you are not allowed to drive with older cars.
So a new 2,5-ton Porsche SUV needing up to 70 liters/100 kilometers may drive there, while my 4,4 liter/100km Quantum may not.
Really "ecologic" green logic LOL

So what does this do to my dream of driving a 60's vintage American muscle car down the autobahn?

Will Dieter look at me with disapproval?

Perhaps...he may not let you touch his monkey...

But if you took him for a ride, he might feel just like a little schoolgirl...

First of all it would be a pretty expensive drive with our Gas Prices right now (~1,95 $ per liter Premium), but with a huge amount of Fun anyway.

And about Dieter:
Yeah baby yeah!!

well i cant say the same with my friends. we like to go cruisin to the beach and lay down some spankings in volleyball.

Of course,i was thinking more of the fact that its harder nowadays to get a car. THe finances, the increased child labor laws, insurance, ect.

I mean, most of the people at my school who had anything of a social life loved to get out there. Cept when i was 15 and a half all i could try to do was run through hoops to get hired, needing a work permit and everything.

But yea, i see how the online thing could also be an influence. I always hear my mother complaining about kids in the future somewhat like a scene from wall-e when i visit her from college.

When I was youngster I drove my share of military wheeled and tracked vehicles on those wonderful German highways. As we ground along at 35-40mph I would often daydream about being in one of these instead. Cruising along with the top down, wind blowing my long 1970's hair, a buxom fraulein (or three) snuggled up at my side, Lynyrd Skynyrd blasting on the 8 Track.

More like the chase in the French Connection in a 67 or 68 (whichever the 1st run for those were) Mustang convertible....though your daydreams will suffice.
