Mexico City Considers Two-Year Marriages

Lovebirds unwilling to commit 'til death do they part will be able to sign short-term marriage contracts under a proposal being considered by Mexico City lawmakers.Couples will be able to choose the term of their marriage, with a minimum length of two years, and renew the contract if they stay happy, according to a reform put forward by the liberal Democratic Revolution Party (PRD).The PRD, which holds the majority in the city government, says the initiative makes sense in a city where divorce rates are soaring."We want to generate affectionate and harmonious relationships between spouses and, in the case that they don't want to stay together, enable them to separate without cumbersome proceedings that only harm families," the PRD's Lizbeth Rojas, who proposed the reform, said. But Mexico's Roman Catholic Church has labeled the proposal "absurd.""It contradicts the nature of marriage," Father Hugo Valdemar, spokesman for the Mexico City Archdiocese, said. It is an "irresponsible and immoral" move by legislators who are "destroying the family and values" to appear fashionable, he added.

While some groups are fighting to get the right to marry, others are fighting to weaken the institution.... Irony?

If you're only getting married for 2 years, what's the point? Does she still get half your stuff in the end?

Rather fags willing to consummate without commitment. Half-hearted love. The next trendy kind of union for pansy asses afraid of saying the big "yes" and who would rather stay at home, cultivate potatoes, or go fly kites instead of using their time to make more mistakes doing random things without any interest.

I'm surprised such a measure doesn't take place for first time a bit north of Mexico. But still, it takes place on that continent, like most things unexpected to ever happen.

Vendor, the problem here is not that their country doesn't want their marriage union to last a lifetime, rather that this country of cowards doesn't want anyone to make mistakes any more, creating a new kind of marriage valid for two years only.

A minimum of two years actually, the contract can be longer than that, but not shorter.

Marriage license should be just like a hunting, fishing, or drivers license. It should expire unless you choose to renew every few years.

If you've ever been Very Happily Divorced like me, you'd understand why.

Different question. Why do you really need a "license" anyway? Why is it up to the state to approve it? Is there a test? Do they warn you of all of the consequences? If they want you to see what a marriage is like, they could just hit you in the head with a hammer and tell you to go home for two days and think about it.

And no, I'm not bitter, even thought it might seem so. My pickup has a bumper sticker that reads "Life's a Bitch, Then You Divorce One".
