Default Mega Mod recommendations

With two very good mega mods available for SH4 (TMO -Trigger Maru Overhauled & RFB -Real Fleet Boat); I was looking for comments on the pros and cons of each before selecting and installing one of them

There are many that play RFB and there are many that play TMO.
It's a matter of what you want from the game.
RFB is a realism mod and TMO more a game playing mod. You get sunk a lot.
RSRD can be used with either. It's a campaign mod that does little to the game play.

Try them both or even stock with capnscervy's OTC and GFO mods.
All are great mods in their own right.

I'm a TMO guy myself with and without RSRD.

its like asking to buy chevy or ford

they both are good and both have things some people arent happy with

play both then decide for yourself, that is the only "real" answer there is to your question, what you like is most often different then what others like

Default Nice choices

I started playing Subsims with Silent Service (which means I'm old), it was like driving a Model T compared with todays cars and advanced Subsims that are out there. It's nice to have choices like these

Try each one, separately. Then try mixing and matching, if you see mod versions that say they were designed to. I'm prone to TMO but am mixing it with either RSRD or FOTRS (Fall of the Rising Sun) as we speak. Also, bear in mind that each person's individual system and software may run the game and mods a little differently. What's essentially glitch free play for one person may experience anything from graphic error to CTD for the next, with both players implementing and running the same mods in the same order (yes, stacking or layering mods can vary just due to the order).

I'm currently compiling my own experiences with mods, stacked and not, and would be interested in collecting the experiences of other members, btw.

Me and some other users have CTDs and reboots with the last TMO. RFB is more stable but the difficulty level is a TIIIIINY bit high (to say the least), I had to make me a sligtly nerfed version to survive and I notmally play SH3 GWX obn the highes realism settings with zero problems....

With any of the supermods the mantra is "keep it simple." Stacking other mods on top of them, unless specifically certified by the author(s) of the supermod can and most times will cause bad effects, which can include CTDs. Unless you know modding very well, I'd run 'em naked.

TMO 2.2 is very stable, and I've had no CTDs. If you are having them you're doing something wrong. It doesn't take much to ruin a good thing. Stacking mods is first, last and center of what causes stability problems.

Argh. Gonna hafta trim down the 23 mods I currently have enabled.

Holy (Moley) ... apparently using too many mods turned me Japanese. I believe I'll stay in my stateroom for the duration. :|

GFO permits modding and is designed for it. So many choices, so little time ....

I ran only TMO 2.0 with the 2.2 patch and added RSRDC (for TMO) according to Lurkers detailed decription (including the latest patch). The reboots happen exclusively when i surface and only in TMO/RSRDC. And when in proximity to japanese airbases.

No error on my side, trust me. Well... this one time at least
