Default Hit by mine.

Using a ViiB back to St Nazaire after a quiete succesfull mission ( using IUB1.02) then i hit a mine.

Hopfully, my sub held the shock. A lot of thing destroyed and four casualty.

Unfortunatly, i was unable to restart my engines ( they were mark as OK ). Had to hit escape to be tow away ...

Is this normal ( engineslooks OK, enouth fuel for the 45 kms until base, command room looks OK ) ... ??

Maybe after that you didn't have enough people in your engine compartment (or they were too fatigued) ?

Some times you need to put your engines into reverse before putting them into forward to get the engines to restart (like last night when I came to a full stop and the engines would not restart until I did this).

Seems to be pretty normal for some reason - same thing happened to me when I apparently hit a mine off the east coast of England - managed to get all the damage repaired that could be repaired, and all my diesel-related parts were reading as if they should be working fine - my electrics and batteries were destroyed so I was looking forward to limping home on the surface and hoping to avoid airplanes or warship encounters on the way back, but no matter what I tried (including the tricks of reversing engines and cycling the engine telegraph forwards and backwards a few times) I could not get the darn boat to move and had to call for a tow (hit the esc key) to get home.

From what I've seen posted around here it seems several others have experienced the same thing after hitting mines.

Now if a U-Boat can survive from been hit by a mine (maybe 500 Kg of explosives) then there is something wrong with the mines or the boat damage modelling. During the war, there was a russian submarine patrolling in the Gulf of Finland when the sub hit a mine. The whole frontal half of the boat were torn apart all the way to the conning tower. I would like to see a damage repairing crew fixing that.

Lol, the effect of the mine in the game is 200 - 320. Maybe should be more? Ideas?

I tend to agree - I would have thought that basically you were toast if your sub hit a mine. Maybe some of the mines (like some of the torps) are duds and only explode with partial force? Having only hit one apparent mine so far, I can't generalize from what hapened as far as how the game models mines in general.

Dying from hitting a mine would be realistic, yes, but I think it would ruin all the fun... I'd rather not die because of a freak random accident.

Ok, it can happen in real life, sure, but in this game, I'd rather die by destroyers or airplanes. Not some dumb mine that I hit while travelling in high TC...

I'd rather die by destroyers or airplanes too if had to pick. And I agree that mines are "dumb" because they can destroy your boat and crew without warning. But that's the way it propably was and my choice is to make mines work that way. It's great to have a possibility to tweak the game the way one want's to play.

I like to play DiD...However, not actually playing the game for so long, I didn't realise that sailing close to the English east coast was no longer healthy. Four times I was greeted with the screen of death when attempting to get to my patrol area - and because it always happened the same way, with the same result (ie same dead crewmen, same damage etc), I simply thought my game was bugged and thus restarted from the last in-base save point.

Then I had an idea...searched the forum...and after looking at the _SCR.mis file, realised the true cause...

Of course, I was happy that my game had not become corrupt. So with that knowledge I decided to re-resume my DiD approach, but on my very next patrol on my way across to Scapa Flow, bet'cha can't guess what happened??? But it was a practice run. Now, I'm back to playing DiD.

BTW, is it just me or do the Subsim forums go down around this time every day?? I started typing this over two hours ago!
