Well Neal is the big boss so if he says he does not like it then that means you cant use them.I am sure they are meaning when obvious is obvious not when you are using an asterisk to make a post like a news flash thing like bullet points before the words or something of that nature.

In other words:
*******Rebels in Libya discover MC Hammer******

The whole idea is an over reaction imo! however in this forum they can dictate any law they like, if it is fully ****** then I fail to see the sense in it at all, what if I use ###### is that supposedly better!

I think it boils down to two things:
A. Follow the rules.
and
2. Use your common sense.

I like this forum. It's one of the few I've seen that allows discussion of certain topics (such as politics and religion, but those can get a bit heated) that hasn't fallen into complete worthlessness and idiocy. I think that says a lot about our host, our moderators, and the community here.

I am not worried about this really I think they just dont want people using asterisks or @#$%^ comic things in place of language because some members have not been following this rule. This is not going to have any effect on this site they will still have a very open topic policy you can still have a deep or heated discussion without those things.

Actually that problem has come up with the moderators before. I was told a long time ago that fully asterisked words were indeed alright, but as soon as you combine it with anything else, such as "ing" it crosses the line. As I understand it cartoon swearing, *#&@^)*** is fully alright, as it's meant to be funny. The problem mainly is with words with just one vowel blanked out. It's just as bad as writing the full word with the letters separated by dashes.

Some don't understand why it's a problem at all. I, on the other hand, don't understand the need for swearing at all. Sure, it helps when I hit my thumb with a hammer, but the casual swearing that goes on today becomes meaningless. What's the point? When I was in the navy we swore, well, like sailors. But never in public and especially not in front of women and children. Today every high-school girl thinks nothing of using language would "make a sailor blush". I should know, and I guess I'm old and out of touch.

The bottom line is that it's Neal's forum and Neal's rules. Some clarification might help, but why push it at all? You can say "It's just words, what's the problem", and I can say "If it's just words, why insist on them?" They don't add to the conversation, and they don't help.

If you wish to use cartoon style swearing %@#$%#$^&, knock yourself out as it is meaningless. However do not try stuff like F&$@ING or the like.

Now as for the swear filter, yes we have one, it's purpose is more to prevent swears from showing up on the forum as swears. But, you are not supposed to be swearing to begin with, hence why I view fully ******* words as being swears.

Again use common sense. I am not here to issue infractions (it is not something I especially enjoy), but it is my job to uphold the rules of the forum, regardless of any personal feelings I may or may not have.

So simply put if the placement of the **** could be read as being a swear, you will get an infraction (a 3 point infraction to be specific, which expires in 10 days.)

Is there any chance of a list of words that cause the automatic asterix? some everyday words do become ******* just because of some letters in the word itself.
On another angle with asterix use, if I was to become one of the loony types of fundamentalist who write "g*d" as writing the full word is going to get me struck by lightning and cast into the pits of h*ll to be prodded by a demon with a pitchf**k for all enternity, would that be an infractionable use of asterix?
It may seem like extracting the urine but the truth of it is that a person who writes g*d would probably find it offensive and vulgar for people to write "god".

My favorite quote from that rule is.

Quote:
Please use language that you would use around your mother.
Which is funny because I don't hold back swear words around my parents. So is this rule telling me to use curse words all the $@#%$!@ time on these forums?

Eh, fine by me. I don't consider any English word swearing anyway, so "freaking" is to me all the same as the supposedly stronger alternative. Or better actually, as "freaking" sounds humorous and the alternative reminds me of insecure teens who haven't ever even seen it without the ".jpg" ending.
