Don't be first, don't be last, and don't volunteer for anything.

I said that once in Boot Camp. The CC (navy doesn't have DIs) said "The Navy doesn't have a draft. When you signed on the dotted line you volunteered for everything!"

I remember a TI (Training Instructor, AF loves to be different), came in and asked everyone, "Who here has a drivers license?".

Every idiot in the room raised their hand.

"OH good, your driving a lawn mower!".

Idiots ended up mowing the parade field - with push mowers.

Hence....Never volunteer for anything.

That reminds me of my bro-in-law at Army boot. The recruits were all seated at desks. This was after the first off the bus screaming and ordering deal you see. The Sgt asked if anyone felt they should not be here at Fort Benning boot camp. My bro-in-law thought he and a few others would raise their hands. Well...he was the only one. So you can imagine the Sgt was screaming at him saying he was going to be his special project for the next 6 weeks. Something to the effect of being his biotch

My bro-in-law was shaking in his boots. The Sgt was extra hard on him.

And, to make matters worse his sister would write a letter to him everyday. For some reason she was addressing the letter incorrectly. As a result of the extra effort of the superior to find him to deliver the letters he got in trouble. At chow time he had to eat by himself with his head down. This went on for two weeks before he could call home and tell his sister to stop writting the wrong address!

She felt bad about that.

He made it through boot and it was a great experience for him.

I knew a guy who committed two sins before he even got to boot camp.

1.) His last name was Slick. Which, is the TI's favorite deragatory term.
"What were you thinking there slick?!" Or , "HEY! Airman slick! Fall in!". Slick applied to anyone, but when your last name is slick.... geez.

2.) He enlisted under a general. Which means, "ill take any job you give me". For example, I enlisted under "General Mechanical" , meaning, I'll take any job i get that is mechanically oriented, and the AF assigns you a job before you leave basic training. Your ONLY garuntee, is that you'll be doing something in the mechanical field. (which is quite board... i ended up in construction.)

So Airman slick...... i don't know if he specified any field or not. I just remember he enlisted under general.

Well, about 3/4s the way through basic we find out our jobs. I find out i'll be swinging hammers. Airman slick? Bus driver.

So after that day came, the whole Flight (Platoon in army terms) got together and decorated his bunk to look like a bus. Even the TI got in on the act. I think he supplied some of the "resources" that were used. (paper plates from the chow hall for bus wheels for example).

Should have seen the look on slicks face when he came back to the barracks and saw his bunk. Poor guy.

Well I got done with Meps at about 12:00 Noon, but my flight to Chicago is at 8:00 PM, I got a wonderful nap in and am not sitting at the USO with my other shipper people studying my PQS stuff! Im getting more and more nervous each hour haha.

You'll remember your first day of boot camp for the rest of your life. It is, the longest day you'll ever have.

For me, it started with outprocessing at MEPS, and ended when the Training Instructor put the flight to bed........ 20 minutes before morning revelry.

My advice, is sleep. Every chance you get before you get to boot camp. Sleep on the plane, sleep on the bus, grab every wink you can get before you arrive. For me, Day 1 of training started with barely 20 minutes of sack time.

Of course.. from the sounds of things, your already gone. Good luck!
