Default WIP (Almost Finished) - Rose Castle Ore Carrier

Here are a couple of shots of the Canadian Ore Carrier Rose Castle - the model is coming along nicely except for some minor texturing issues and one deck container I still can't figure out how to remove. It is not finished though - I will resume work later today.

The red skin is a stock skin from the Liberty Ship.

Another great - looking historically-based model. It'll be an excellent stan-in for dozens of classes of medium-sized cargo ships. If you're talking about the third freight container, you might want to find the node for it and try lowering it into the hull.

Hi!

You might want to look up "s No External Cargo Option mod" in the mods section at http://u-boot.realsimulation.com to see if that is of any help.

The mod was written by "Boog" (so I guess it was originally named "Boog's No External Cargo Option mod" but the site dropped everything from the apostrophe forward).

It would be great if we could define additional types of cargo. We badly need an "ore" cargo option for this ship and my own ore carrier to represent that cargo's effects. Something to make the ship sink very quickly, but without a lot of fireballs and smoke plumes.

Was the "Rose Castle" a dedicated ore carrier, or did she just happen to be carrying ore when she was sunk?

I looked at a pic of her and I have to say the liberty ship was a great choice for the hull. It's roughly the same shape, and was just a few hundred tons lighter than the "Rose Castle".

I'm not sure if she was a full-time ore carrier or not. I think so though. It's interesting to note that when she was sunk at anchor, another ore carrier was sunk too - a converted oil tanker, PLM 27. She still had the tanker silhouette too. I'm not going to make something like that though, as a ship of that type would be rare.

The same year, two other ore carriers were sunk at the same anchorage - the Saganaga and Lord Strathcona (the Sag. was British and the LC was Canadian). The four wrecks are still there now in water so shallow they can be viewed from the surface.

I was looking at a page on PLM 27 the other day at uboat.net. I was surprised after looking at her pic, since I'd expected based on the name that it would be a patrol craft of some type. That's a pretty lame name for a cargo ship, if you ask me . I mean, why not "Oremaster", or "Iron King", or something like that? :hmm:

Anyway, when I'm finished with the new models and skins for ships I'm going to try to submit some additional names for the RUB update that adds names to the vessels. I think it's a nice touch that really adds a sense of history to the game.

EDIT:

a pic of PLM 27

Looking forward to it. Just to clarify though, it's SH3 Commander that has the real ship names feature.

On this topic, I dunno if you have any thoughts on http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=45125 (towards the bottom)? Unfortunately, SH3 doesn't record the nationality of sunk ships, so the naming can be a little hit and miss now and again.

Rose Castle almost ready, except for that crate. Here are the latest pictures.

As for release dates, I am not sure when any of these merchants will be ready for release. I have decided to take up the dev team's offer of fixing models - they can fix the textures, zones, smoke, flags, etc. and I can't. I have already sent them the Ammunition Carrier - I will post when it is returned and let everyone know how it turned out.

GREAT looking work!!

I will say that the dam crates are so overdone in the game. For #$%^%^$& sake :rotfl:

In the cargo.cfg you can change the entry to null. Removes it from all ships, but really, as I said, it is a bit overdone.

I don't really want to remove the deck cargo from all ships...just from this one. :hmm:

I also started a generic 3,850 ton tanker, but it turned out to be such a piece of crap that I cancelled it. I am now trying to think of a new ship to start - one has been sent to the dev's for finishing and three more are about at that stage. I was planning on making either a new Coastal Merchant, a Lake Ship, or the 7000 ton Lord Strathcona, but I want to make more generic small freighters. Can someone suggest a good parent ship to use for a generic 3000-4500 ton freighter. I am not using the Small Merchant anymore - everything I have ever made from it crashed the game.

BTW - Der Teddy Bear, I know it has only been a day, but how is the Ammunition Freighter coming along? Have you heard anything?
