I was just wondering if anybody has ever spent a whole patrol poking into every enemy port going down a given coast line. I tried this once and it went by surprisingly well, easy targets! only hit one mine so far!

Although I did not know it was a mine at first, cruising away at silent speed and then crash bang boom!

Did you do it surfaced, as would be required for real?

In stock, with a II boat, this is relatively easy, if intrepid.

GWX fixes this by moving the needle from "intrepid" to "are you out of your mind?"

Depends. For example, I have played a Black Sea campaign by mostly raiding harbors and have been relatively successful. Wouldn't try it in the Atlantic, though: with all the convoys in the high seas the risk is just not worth the reward, unless it's some specific capital ship you are going after.

Harbor raids in stock SH3 are a great way to rack up tons - especially Iceland, and the Carribean ports of Trinidad andAruba (fat tankers; no serious protection).

After installing GWX, I visited all the harbors in England, Scotland, France, and New York PRE-WAR on the surface, just to see what might be sitting there. With very few exceptions, it wouldn't be worth the risk after war is declared.

One or two but not all. I like to get my crew back alive, so I prefer calculated risks rather than suicidal ones.

I don't do it when I play, mainly because it wasn't something they made a habit of. The game makes it far too easy.

I love hitting Gibraltar. There's plenty of ships there, and if you're detected it's only a short run before you're in deep enough water to evade pinging and reload torps.

There's that little section to the northeast where the water drops to over 1000 meters for some reason...
