Default TDW Manual tartgetting - XO says "On your bearing"

Hi guys - noobie question - I'm using the TDW 6.4.0 UI mod and learning to manually enter the parameters for the torpedoes while looking at the target through the periscope or deck-mounted binoculars.

How to you get the XO to prompt you for the range, AOB, ship type etc values instead of just saying "Following your bearing, sir" when you hit the space bar???

I'm actually doing quite well with the manual targetting when actually prompted for the parameters and scoring some reasonable shots, but sometimes I get the XO prompt for the parameters and sometimes I get "Following your bearing" instead which seems to mean I just point the crosshairs in front of the ship and hope I guessed the right amount of 'lead'.

Sorry this might not be entirely clear - I'm assuming the proper way to set the parameters such as range and AOB is via the underlined values in the XO message. When I hit 'space' to select a target, somehow I sometimes get that message (Turn TDC on? followed by the underlined message?") and sometimes "Following your bearing, sir" with the ony response "Never mind.".

Any clues appreciated.

Thanks

It depends on which selection you make on entering the XO Dialoge Box.

Automatic Targeting or Manual Targeting

Auto (TDC Turned on) just give the Following you bearing as it plots the solution for you.
Manual (TDC Turned off) is where you have to do all the hard work

thanks very much for your help but I've had another try and still need a bit more hand-holding through the actual key-presses:

What I think I'd like to do is use the TDW 6.4.0 dials to set all the values for the torpedo targetting solution e.g. I have been able to set the torpedo speed with the three-position switch and change the torp depth, but that's about it. I'm guessing this is the way a user is expected to use the TDW modded UI:

I look at the target through the scope, hit the space bar so a little yellow triangle appears under the target (sometimes?) and sometimes I get the XO dialog that prompts for the underlined range, speed, AoB values. If I hit the 'X' key the scope conveniently follows the target so I don't have to track it manually while I'm inputting the other values. When I get the XO underlined dialog up I'm good-to-go with mouse-clicks on that although I'd rather be turning the TDW dials.

E.g. I have never been able to adjust the AoB values on the TDW dial, I've tried left-click, right-click, rotating the mouse wheel but am not sure what I'm looking for.

I've seen the XO dialog say "turn TDC on"+"Never mind" and then "turn TDC off"+"Never mind" but once I'm in that loop I can't work out how to get the dials to work or get the underlined dialog to show up.

I'm sure this thread looks dopey to anyone who knows what they're doing, apologies - please think back to when you were a noob like me...

cheers,
Bamzors

Try my "Fast90" tutorial - download link from my sig.

It will take you through this in game. Buttons and dials will highlight as you need to click them.
When installed - select tutorials from main menu then fast90

When you open the XO Dialog you will see like you said above either:
"turn TDC on"+"Never mind"
or
"turn TDC off"+"Never mind"

Depending on which one you see will depend on the Mode the TDC is in.

1. If you see "turn TDC on"+"Never mind" This means your in Manual TDC Mode if you click it you will go into Auto TDC Mode.

2. If you see "turn TDC off"+"Never mind" This means your in Auto TDC Mode if you click it you will go into Manual TDC Mode.

So to access the dials and not just have the yellow triangle you need to be in option 1. So click the option till it displays "turn TDC on"+"Never mind" and then lock on to the target "Space" you are now in Manual Mode

cool thanks Trevally and reaper7 - I'll spend another week practicing after looking at the tutorial info. I'm sure I'll get it this time.
