Default Neighbors...

I grew up on a farm as a kid. Up until 8 years ago I had a small farm, about 20 acres, barns, etc. Years ago a tornado took out my barns, damaged the house, etc, getting old and blessed with a nerve disease moved into a neighborhood. Lot's are about 3/4 acres, but generally houses beside each other, you can say hey to your neighbor without yelling.

I have a strange one. The couple is very geek, both work in labs. It use to be common for him to crank up a chainsaw at 11pm or hear him mowing grass with a push mower, wearing that silly lighted miners helmet late at night.

Now he's into chickens..We live in the city limits. These are some big egg layers, a Rooster. They can get rather loud night and day. I can hear them easily when I sleep and of course every cluck makes my dog bark...It's becoming an issue. Started with a few, now appears he has about 20.

Anyway, another dumb thread, let's hear you best or worse neighbor stories..

I have a suburban neighbor who decided to get into chickens. The clucks I don't mind. The rats their food attracts in droves I could do without.

We had one that had bee hives. You can imagine how much fun that was in the summer...particularly mowing the lawn. Bees LOVE lawnmowers...

One of my neighbors to clean their house every Sunday at 06:00, sharp, which means a vacuum cleaner that sounds like a jet, and his woman who mows the lawn, trim with a scissors, manually and then, not only that it will play loud music, which I am compelled to respond with something to play Rnb or equivalent so that I can hear my music "only" ... and their cleaning cycles, you can set the time after, year-round

When I was living in Utah, I was renting an apartment in this rat-trap house. My neighbours were a bunch of buttheads and played their loud music with no consideration for anyone else.

Well the wiring in the house was not so good. I knew that two of the more obnoxious were big football fans (as I had to listen to them on Sundays)

Comes the Superbowl. I think this would be a good time to vacuum my apartment. Which I did for almost four hours, which takes a lot of doing considering my apartment was about 200 sq feet.

Gee, I hope my vacuuming did not scramble their TV sets. That would be bad. Too bad my cheap vacuum cleaner was so loud that I could not hear the knocking on my door...

Just like they could not hear my knocking on their door when they were blasting their music late in the weeknight.

Having a clean carpet is important.

Hah, reminds of being in my late 20's living in a second floor apt. The downstairs neighbors would do a cookout, loud music, rowdy, prolly 20 of them. I told them to calm it down several times. I use to be a hell of a man then, jump off roofs, benchpress 400lbs, etc...One of them told me to shut the F up. I got so mad I jumped off my second floor balcony, not a big drop, gonna go whoop some arse...I broke my leg. Course I tried to walk off with a lil pride, but they got the last laugh.

The house I'm currently renting is in a suburb of Fort Worth. At least, it looked like a suburb when I signed the lease. As it turns out, the neighborhood is some kind of were-neighborhood; normal by day, but at night it turns into a ghetto, or more precisely, a barrio. My first clue was when I found a passed-out mexican dude on my lawn one morning during my first week of residence.

Pretty much every night is the same thing. Loud music from car stereos, shouting, the laughter of rowdy drunk people, and the faint smell of pot upon the warm twilight breeze. I'd call the cops, but they show up pretty regularly on their own, not that it does any good.

It was on one of these lovely evenings that my room-mates and I, along with some mutual acquaintances, were....I believe the parlance is "chilling"... on the back porch when across the street there arose such a clatter that one of said acquaintances and I sprang from our lawn-chairs to see what was the matter. Then what to our wondering eyes did appear, but a tatted latino male, cowering in fear.

He rushed towards my companion and I,
Gibbering in Spanglish I did not recognize.

There was but one word that I gathered from this,
The word was matar, in the infinitive.

Matar is Spanish, meaning to kill,
but IIRC it was meant in a tense akin to "they will".

As I tried to make sense of this amidst his rambling, three more latino males appeared,
not quite walking, but not quite shambling.

Each of the three held a blade of some size,
Fifteen centimeters or so apiece, at least to my eyes.

'Twas then that cause of his fear was apparent,
These men wished to stab him, for some deed they found errant.

Not knowing the cause, and not really caring,
My companion and I sheltered the man they found erring.

I gently suggested that they should get lost,
But still they advanced, not giving a toss.

As much as I love fighting people with knives,
There was clearly a need to re-strategize.

It was then that I chose to employ one more friend,
One with a business-minded nine-millimeter end.

The friend I refer to is my P38,
1943, of quality Walther make.

Then upon the assailants it finally dawned,
That they should take my advice and get the **** off my lawn.

The tatted latino was taken away,
Safe with the cops who were fashionably late.

Clearly, I am not schooled in proper verse,
In fact, I destroyed it,
But that is my poem,
And I hope you enjoyed it.

Behind my house is a rental property. I had a tree on my side of the fence that was becoming a problem. Large limbs would come down in windy storms. The tenent complained that it was a hazard. For me, the tree was not an issue however not to be found negligent in a court of law if said tree did go down damaging the rental property or possibly worse in hurting one of his kids I had the tree removed. The tree removed at my expense cost $2000.00. The fence posts/fence that had to removed to allow a bucket truck close to the tree for removal had to come down. I found the post to be rotten and needing replacement. In the meantime before work began I contacted the property owner. I drafted up an email with what I needed to do(access their backyard with a truck) and work needing to be done the fence between our properties. I told them I would replace the posts and panels but I was not going to reinstall their panels on their side of the property. If they would like to share the cost of the fence then all panels on both sides could be reinstalled after said tree is down. The property owner did not say a word. So, I replaced all the posts at my expense and my time. I replaced my original good panels. I cleaned up the rental property yard after the tree truck was gone. I threw out grass seed on said property. I replaced a rotted post completely on the opposite side of the property were the bucket truck had to come through to access the tree. I left the rental property panels leaning on the fence on his side of the fence. Job done. This was a year ago. Two weeks ago I come home to see the rental property's old panels hammered to my fence posts. WTF? I spend $2000.00 for tree removal. $300.00 for materials on the fence plus my entire weekend to complete the fence and these old crappy panels on the rental property side are hammered on looking like crap! Last time I checked the fence and posts were not community property. I paid for it and installed it. The rental property owner did not want to share the expense of a fence between our two properties. At any rate, if the tenent asked of he could reinstall his panels I would have said yes and helped insuring the install looked nice. That was not done. So screw it...I don't want the old crappy haphazard installed panels on my posts. I contacted the slum lord who owns the property. They advised the tenent was called to remove the panels since they put them up without permission. Two weeks go by. Panels still up. Another email. Again with the calling tenent to remove the panels. I said calling does not work. The property belongs to Mandrin Homes and it is Mandrin Homes responsibility to take care of the property. If the panels are not removed in the following week then we will move to court concerning the fence. The panels are now down.

All of this could be avoided if the slum lord and or tenent asked if the old panels cold be reinstalled on his side of the property line. It was not asked. I was just done and illegally. The fence is private property. I will liken it to hammering a panel to the side of someones house with out asking . It just is not done unless permission granted. I spent my money to remove a troublesome tree the tenent complained about. I spent my money to remove and repair/replace the fence between our property lines. Property owner and tenent did nothing monetarily or physically. I did this as a good neighbor after said tenent complained of the tree. Now they want to hammer on any old thing to my fence. Not happening. I don't care at this point if the tenent does not like me. Good neighbors talk when things like this crop up. Agreements are made. I extended my hand and cash last year. None was recipicated in same. In short, screw'em!

Do have one great neighbor, across the street. The couple is from Laos. The man is much older than the wife, he's 64, she's appears 40ish. He's very traditional. Anytime he walks around the block, she follows several paces behind. If he stops and talks, she stops paces behind. She barely speaks english, just gives a lil bow, but boy can she cook. She's always bringing food over here, all in traditional wood bowls.
