Going to have to go with Howard on this one. Especially with the release of U-Boot_HAHD not far off, Type II is the way to go

That'll be the main reason I will return to the type II soon. However they will also incorporate certain VII and IX types. Probably not from the first release but they will be playable later on

This reminds me of a question. Playing GWX with Commander, how do I go about transferring to the Pacific (or the Black Sea, for that matter)? I assume I load the "GWX-Merged Campaign" mod, but then what? What do I have to set in Commander, then what do I do in the game?

Does GWX?

IXC is the way to go.

Although I might try a II_ campaign for experimentation purposes.

Just enable(thru JSGME) GWX-Black Sea Campaign or GWX-Indian Ocean Campaign (for the Pacific) if you want only one of those theaters. The merged campaign will load everything (Indian Ocean, Black Sea, Atlantic) with probably a huge increase in loading times.
If you load one of those individual campaigns, only ships in those areas will load, so if you are still sailing in the Atlantic, you will definitely be lacking a target rich environment-there will be no ships whatsoever in the Atlantic.

To transfer with a current career, you just have to use the transfer selection in the captain's office in-game. I'm not sure what you have to do with Commander though, if anything.

I go to the Tye IX as fast as I can in the war. With luck, you will have an uncontested year to play havoc with that big deck gun! Early in the war, a Type IX can easily wipe out an entire convoy, especially if you take out the escorts.

Last time I made it to 1944, I had switched back to a Type VII in the hopes that maneuverability would save me.

I'd thought I was supposed to sail there first (when transferring from another flotilla). Well, it's a while off yet. I'll ask for a step-by-step when I get to that point.

In the type XXIII mod, the readme says it doesn't work with any other mods.

In order to fight in the Far East check this out: (from the GWX manual)
310 Sources:
The 10th Flotilla in GWX
The 10th Flotilla is a stock Silent Hunter III flotilla; in GWX, the 10th Flotilla operates as in stock Silent Hunter III through December 1942.
• BdU will start ordering you to patrol map grids in the South Atlantic starting in January 1943, and you will start receiving radio messages advising of a pending transfer to Penang.312
• On September 1, 1943, GWX will redesignate your home base as Penang and you will travel there just as the Gruppe Monsun boats did, so ensure you are in command of a Type IXD2 U-boat by this time if you want to make it to your new base without refuelling.
• If you start a 10th Flotilla career on or after January 1, 1944, you will take command of a Type IXD2 boat that is already in Penang and transfer to Jakarta on November 1, 1944. The flotilla moved to Jakarta because the Allies laid aerial minefields near Penang to interdict the U-boats based there.
• If you start a 10th Flotilla career on or after November 1, 1944, your Type IXD2 boat will start in Jakarta, which will be your base until the end of the war.

It certainly does pack a punch...

I couldn't believe how easy it was to take a merchant down at first. Quite the blast, literally!

In SH3, probably none.

For real, it's an extra layer of protection around the pressure hull.
Kind of a shock absorber.

Type II & VII = single hull.
Type I & IX = double hull.

The 10th Flotilla in GWX ...
*Snip*
Sweet, thanks. That GWX manual is huge. I haven't gotten through it all, so I didn't know that was in there.

So if I transfer to the 10th flotilla and I'm starting a patrol shortly before september 1st '43, I should load the merged campaign for that one patrol. That way there'll be ships in the Atlantic and Indian oceans en route. Then, when I get there, I load the GWX Indian Ocean campaign files before leaving Penang.

Correct.
You can transfer to the 10th at any time.
If you don't bother about loading times like I do , just load the GWX Merged campaign and leave it there.
