On some level I understand why the 9/11 troofers believe what they do. They're complete lunatics, don't get me wrong, but I can at least sort of follow the thought process.

9/11 was such a huge event...a tragedy on an enormous scale. Nothing could have prepared someone for that. It was such a random event with such malice behind it as to be mind boggling. Now the human mind naturally seeks order. The 9/11 troofers have decided to believe that 9/11 had to be a planned and scripted event. Their mind recoils in horror at the thought that it was well and truly random. They have to believe that the Bush administration planned it. Of course that makes the Bush administration treasonous and evil, but in their mind there's at least some measure of control and order in the universe and that's all that counts.

That's just my amateur psychologist theory anyways.

And not a bad theory either, but the fact is that 9/11 was indeed planned and scripted, just not by the people the troofers think did it.

Was the same with the Pearl Harbor conspiracy theories which starting cropping up almost as soon as the Japanese planes departed. Given the racial climate of the time, there were some who were far more comfortable with the idea that warnings were deliberately ignored from on high and the attack was allowed to proceed by FDR, than with the idea that a "diminutive, imitative people who lived in ramshackle paper cities" had caught the US Navy napping in it's biggest Pacific base.

The FDR conspiracy theory goes back that far? I would have thought folks of the time would have an easier time believing in a Japanese 5th column.

The other popular theory of the time was that the attack was carried out in German planes with Japanese markings. Or with German planning behind it, etc. As long as it wasn't the actual Japanese, who after all couldn't beat the inept and corrupt Chinese after ten years of war...so how could they have surprised us? The prevailing thought was that everything they made from guns to planes was a cheap knock-off of a Western model. There were some like Claire Chennault some who knew better, but not enough.

The argument could be made that those illusions persisted until the Battle of Savo Island, in August 1942.

Admiral Turner after reflection on the defeat phrased thus,

"The Navy was still obsessed with a strong feeling of technical and mental superiority over the enemy. Savo Island probably does mark the point where the US Navy got serious. In most surface ships they starting throwing all the fancy woodwork, trim and furniture in the officers quarters that had burned so easily overboard. Nice to have around in peacetime, not so much in war.
