Why would you even play an MMO if not for the pvp?

uhh PvE content. Many people do not like PvP particularly in mmo's due to things like ganking, and level/gear differences being more important than player skill. Personally I have a huge dislike towards being forced into PvP. I prefer consensual PvP where I have the choice (duels, PvP zones, etc).

I'm right there with NeonSamurai. I really don't enjoy the PvP as much. Makes me wonder why I play EVE.

That's what I like about EVE, the amount of freedom you have. Personally enjoy every aspect of EVE pvp, except large blob warfare.

I'm going to have to disagree. The only reason that I am considering signing up for an MMO is PvP. The combat in these types of games is simplified, gear-based, and with outcomes largely determined by dice rolls. If I am going to play against the AI, I'd rather do that in a non-MMO environment, where I get greater control over my character and methods of attack and where the enemy AI is superior. The reason that I would tolerate what amounts to weaker gameplay is the social aspect of MMOs. That is, playing with and against other people because, frankly, these games are extreemly weak without the persistent multiplayer aspect.

In regard to non-consentual PvP, that aspect of having to watch over your shoulder is one of the things that has me looking at EVE. It forces you to interact with others, creating a more open in-game society.

Personally I have little interest in MMO's. I absolutely hate grinding of any kind, and find the process utterly tedious. In many mmo's to pvp (or pve) effectively, particularly at end game, you need the right items sets and builds to match. Getting the gear has to be the worst part of all, as grinding for such crap is unbelievably tedious. I also tend to be a soloist/explorer in playstyle, and don't much like being forced into groups with others, or being forced to socialize if I do not feel like it (though I usually belong to a guild).

As for forced pvp I absolutely hate it (I'm usually found on the role-playing servers). I've played mmo games with some of the most brutal forced pvp you can think of (everything from experience loss, to loosing everything you had on you, where everyone you do not know is an enemy and will gank you in an instant). Ganking is the one thing I despise more than anything else in an mmo. It is completely unfair and cowardly. I much prefer chosen pvp either by pvp zones or flags or whatever.

As for Eve, I have to say I would rather watch paint dry then play that game

As for non mmo games, I prefer co-op to pvp (Team or otherwise). I use to play competitively on the ladders way back in the day (i was a pretty good flag capper in tribes 1&2). But I kind of got sick of it. I especially hate PUGing, as that's where you find all the little twerps and hacks, which totally turn me off multiplayer.

The heck is PUGing?

I feel like Neon. Don't want things forced on me, prefer coop over adversarial. I like playing against or with friends, but I'll rarely venture into random matchmaking and the likes. In fact, think the first time I really played competitively was the day Shogun 2 was released.

To be honest since I found my footing all I want is to play with friends again, either team up against other teams or keep it friendly. Might try another 1v1 made match every now and then, but for a challenge, not to compete.

I really want to get into that Shogun clan, but I don't think my current machine won't be able to handle the game without problems. So, I just joined the SubSim Steam group to wisfully pine the time away.

There is no forced pvp in EVE online, the moment you sign on you give consent.

You can always test out the demo that's on Steam.

PUG stands for Pick Up Game, or randomly joining a group/server

I would call that forced in the sense that if I want to play, I am made to PvP when I may not want to.

Anyhow I figure I will split off this discussion into a new thread

I like how Runescape did it back in the day I played it. Basically, you had wilderness to the north and how the PvP worked was that the farther into the wilderness you went the bigger the number over your head grew. The number dictated who I could attack, say I am level 40 and there's a 6 over my head, so that would mean I can attack and be attacked by players from level 34 to 46.

I like how it is handled in EVE, the only place where ganking is not premited are complete newbie systems, everywhere else you are fair game. Though ganking people in highsec has consequences and you can easily avoid it by taking precautions since most ganks in eve are greed motivated, not just by lulz.
EVE is not a forgiving world and it takes some knowhow and effort to survive, which is why I like it.

For comparisation, I have:

AMD X2 6000+ @ ~3 Ghz
4 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 512 MB
Creative X-FI Gamer

I can run the game quite smoothly on medium settings for large battles, small/medium battles I can up the texture and unit quality to ultra without much of an drop.

Low settings give a very smooth performance, but of course it doesn't look very good.
