Cameron pressures Gaddafi to step down

David Cameron has added his weight to the growing international pressure on Col Muammar Gaddafi to step down amid widespread protests against his regime.

The prime minister urged the Libyan leader to "go now" and said the country had no future "that includes him".

The UK has frozen his British-held assets and those of his family, and withdrawn their diplomatic immunity.

On Sunday, an RAF Hercules came under small-arms fire rescuing oil workers - including 20 Britons - from the desert.

I doubt Camerons words will cut any ice with Gaddafi.

I don't think any amount of pressure or wherever it comes from will force him or persuade him to step down.
He was already quoted as saying recently: " "I will fight to the last drop of my blood."
And if you are thinking sanctions will, the sanctions' effect(s) would be limited. Freezing Gadhafi's accounts, enforcing a weapons embargo and not granting visas to his officials will not deter him from continuing his war against his civilians. If in countries like Iran and Sudan the sanctions were meant to encourage people to change their government or show the regimes they risked losing popular support, in Libya the popular revolt already happened, without the sanctions. And the leader couldn't care less about legitimacy in the eyes of the people. It seems the sanctions are used more to express solidarity with the Libyan people than to stop the war or penalize Gadhafi.

I doubt the boys would take him seriously having seen the cuts he's imposed on the forces.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard somewhere that they (the protesters) don't want any Western military intervention. (A nice way of saying, "Thanks, but no thanks. You've screwed things up enough, now its our turn to make things right.")

Agree it's their country, their problem.

The problem is that the country could not cope with a non-foreign presence, moreover, there are many foreigners in the country who want's home

Didn't they also want a western backed No Fly Zone over Libya?

When Libyan forces open fire on an RAF Herc things become different.

Is Cameron the Obama of the UK? It is easy to call for change after change is already happening.
