Default Hydrophone checking schedule.

I was just wondering what is a good schedule and practice for checking the hydrophones might be?

I have been doing an every hour dive to 20-25 meters and kill the engines and do a sweep of the hydrophone. This can be a P.I.T.A when using higher time compressions..Im diving every 20-30 seconds real time.

Is this good or can I go longer between dives and sweeps..like 2-3 hours between sweeps?

Given the relatively slow speed of your own boat and the typical slow merchant, and the relatively long range at which you can hear with the 'phones, diving for sound sweeps as frequently as once an hour is probably overkill, unless maybe you're hanging around outside a port or camped on a major convoy route or something where you really expect some frequent traffic.

I generally dive every 2-4 hours if I'm anywhere I really expect to find something, and only about every 6-8 hours or so if I'm on a long transit and don't feel like breaking up the trip that often. Purely a matter of personal preference though, I suppose.

Just play in real time, the dives will be a welcome diversion then!

I also mostly dive every 2-4 hours, depends a bit on where I am and if I expect anything to be there.

I plot a course line and make checkmarks let's say every cm on the map. When the game stutters I know there is a ship/convoy nearby but only when I'm on top of a checkmark I will dive and check the hydro.

If you don't mind I am not doing to 30 min hydro check on 20000km IX patrolls. :P

One of the old tip-offs was pressing <cntl F8> to activate frame rate and when operating in TC x512 whenever near a ship the rate drops from 3 digits down to 2 digits. This signals you to goto PD if on the surface...head directly to sonar, press all stop...then listen

Up to 1942 so far, I just cruise on the surface (with maxed out crewmen on the bridge watch). The watch always spots ships way before they are close enough to be a threat (or target). I assume as the opposition gets stronger this will be problematic

You guys will think I am nuts. But I dive every 20 kms and listen in target rich places like the channel. I plot my course and all along the course I place 20km circles. When I get in the centre of one I dive and listen. I do this as I read that the effective range of the hydrophones is 20km

When I'm travelling to and from my patrol grid, I only stop and do a sound check in the center of each grid along the way.
