Default Dunkirk

Due to an unfortunate intersection of the course of five Hurricanes and my own course while loading an external, this is no longer a pressing concern of mine...

Still, out of curiosity.

While between Dover and Dunkirk on 27 May 40, I pick up on hydrophones a fair number of warships. But no merchants. Question: are the evacuating ships all marked as warships for the evacuation? Or was I too early on hand, and the "Dunkirk Fleet" has not yet sailed?

Unfortunately, I was gutted like a cod before I could investigate further, and since I go only where BdU sends me, it's likely I won't do Dunkirk for another year or so (in real life).

I do know there are quite a few destroyers around there, with most pulling up to shore to simulate loading, and then backing off and heading for England. There are several troop transports and/or liners in Dunkirk harbor that I've seen and shot a few torpedoes at.

So, for game purposes, everything is considered warship?

There's also major aircraft activity during the escape. The troop transports are some juicy targets but can ultimately be a fatal journey with it being shallow water and aircraft dropping bombs or charges that are usually right on the mark with such close quarters.

I can promise you I would have not been there if BdU had not ordered me there.

Until I have 100m under my keel my toes are curled like overcooked shrimp.

No everything is not a warship, just that there are a lot of them, destroyers, minesweepers, trawlers, PT type boats, ect. When I was in the harbor, the troop transports/liners showed as merchants. I think there was a merchant or 2 there as well but, I'm not sure about that because it was awhile back when I made this raid. BTW got away with it too.

Both merchants and warships are scripted....there are several convoys doing a shuttle service for the historical dates of the evacuation.

Did you manage to send some rounds with the AA guns or you never stood a chance?

Got off a half dozen rounds, maybe, but they blew holes into just about every compartment.

My mistake, not that I think it would have helped, was forgetting to mount a flak watch while I was transferring the external. If I had, I might have gotten one.
