Default Who Drives What?

Ok guys, roll 'em sleeves up, let's have it out...

Who drives what? I know we have our little weasels sneaking around in their type-II's- desperate to get one ship per eel, and fat ones at that.

Or our 'old reliable' foot soldiers, searching the atlantic in their trusty type-VII's

Then there are the tanks of early war, the Type-IX'ers, you guys got one the moment they came out, hungry for more range, and more eels for you to sink those brits with

And finally our Elektroboot'ers, the savy tech-heads who want to make a mark with the last and most advanced of everything

So come on, fess up!

It's been so long since I played far enough to have my choice, but with the next patrol I think I'm changing up for a IXB... head south for the spring!

I always begin with my trusty IXB.
Then I have two options:
First
1. Keep it like this and upgrade to IXC when available and then install all goodies like radar detectors , decoys etc.
2. Later if I have some good patrols and survive I get a XXI.

Second
1. Upgarde the IXB with anything availabe
2. Take a IXD2 when available and sail to the Far East.

70% Type IX
20% Type VII
10% Type II (in the Black sea)

As you see I'm more of a IX person and at this very moment sailing IXB. From time to time I do like to give the others ago.

I always have consecutive careers going. Since I recently restarted (for the seventeen gazillionth time) I have a Type IIb with the 1st Flotilla, a Type VIIa with the 2nd and a Type VIIb with the 7th. As soon as December comes I'll also have a IXb with the 1st.

That said, the truth is that until I get my new computer I'm not really playing at all.

I usually like to start in 1939 with a II, once I've earned enough renown, move up to a IIB, upgrade a few things, and when IXC comes out move in and upgrade as much as I can and see how long I can go. I have never made it long enough to get an XXI.

Type IXB at the beginning of the war, and then I upgrade to a IXC. The IXD2 has nice range, but I hate its handling.

I'm a Type IX'er. I like having the available range to go out for extended periods.

From time to time I'll go out in a Type IID to play Ninja of the North Sea.

I drive a type VII most of the time.

Every once in a while I try a type IX, because it looks better (both from the outside and from the conning tower), has better range, carries more torpedoes and has a better deck gun. I don't mind the slower maneuverability, especially as the IX feels more stable than a type VII on the surface. Being a bigger target is somewhat annoying though, and gets me killed more often.

The huge load of torpedoes and further away patrol zones make for tediously long patrols, however. Finishing patrols gives me a sense of accomplishment and allows me to manage my crew, consider upgrades, transfers, and so on.

The type VII offers, for me, the best combination of firepower, survivability and patrol length. I can attack a convoy twice and have a few torpedoes remaining for ships I see on my way to the convoy and back. If I don't manage to find a convoy, I can attack lone merchants and get back home in a reasonable patrol time.

And if I want to, I can patrol around Gibraltar and the North African coast and resupply at one of the many supply ships. I prefer a two part patrol, visiting a supply ship in between, over the single long patrol of a larger boat.

Although I do drive others, IXB is my favorite.

It's not for the extra eels, as I don't carry external reloads.
I like the stability, surface speed, range, handling, and oxygen endurance.

In order behind the IXB are
IXC, VIIB, IID.

If I can help it,
the VIIC is not for me.

No. The IX Class grows with each new variant.
IX(A)
IXB
IXC
IXD2 / IXD1

The Type X was larger yet (mine layer).

The Type XIV was also a very large boat (tankers).
