Sh5 Graphics Question.

Okay, so heres the situation. My current computer cannot run Sh5, Im not too worried however because in the next 4 months I will be shipping out for bootcamp. However, I will be getting paid and not using too much of my money and Id love to play Sh3, 4, 5 and other great computer games in my free time.

So my plan is, since Id be getting stationed many different places, is to get a gaming laptop which would be very portable and great to play.

My question is this, do any of you use a gaming laptop to play SH5? And if you do does it play it smoothly and what make and model is it??

Secondly, if no one does use one, what would be highly specs to look for in computer that would run SH5 at max settings, with mods ultra smooth. Basically, what would be the beastliest computer settings I could get.

Basically you want plenty of RAM (4GB min) and a fast/modern GPU chipset from ATi/AMD or Nvidia. To cut a long story short due to the competition amoungst vendors you get what you pay for. Your budget will determine the performance...

I wouldn't go for a specialist gaming latop myself as they tend to ask a high premium for small increases in performance.

This is my setup... cost me $1200 AUD (Australian)

3 Ghz Desktop Dual Core 4Gb Ram, Nvidia 9600GT vid card. The Ram
is the fastest I could get. Married to a 300gb Hard Disk, n 16 x DVD Player/Burner.

Comes down to $ really... if money wasn't an issue... you could boost it up by running TrackIR to track ur head movements, add to that Force grip controller (mouse feeds forces back thru ur hand even recoils from guns, or walking down steps).. marry that to the new 3D Systems u've got a nice system.

I'm sure u can play it on a laptop, but they aren't usually made for high end pc games... best thing would be take the game to the store with u, n install it on a few machines n see how it performs. Worth the time if it works well enough .

Toshiba Qosmio laptop (the -X555) runs SH5 just fine at high settings It's a beast of a laptop. One of the best things I ever bought for the road.

You can find them on newegg for $1200-1800. The new versions come with the newest nVidia cards in them They also come with Blue Ray players (at least mine did).

Mine has the nVidia 360 in it.

If I had 1800 Id buy one right now. and this laptop plays sh5 perfectly smooth with a ton of mods in it?? What kind of FPS do you get? (Specifically in high traffic areas like a convoy or in harbour)

And just out of curiousity is there any way to turn the dang TDC back t SHIII style?? Or is it hardcoded?

i made the mistake of thinking 4GB ram was plenty but its not enough for win7 64bit (well its JUST enough)

for win7 64bit to run well it needs ALL 4GB of ram so as you know or should know the more extra you have the better things work so it is recommended you have at least 6GB of system ram for win7 64bit

if you use 32bit you can do ok with just 4GB but i really see no reason NOT to get 64bit OS now days

also you can get great deals on 460 and 470 cards right now and ram is cheap so you picked a good time to get a great deal on all your stuff.

i wouldnt go top of the line on everything but instead get the #2 or #3 item to save a ton of money (thats why i didnt suggest any 500 series cards) and you would never notice any difference between them

last get a high quality (but not needed to be highest priced) power supply of 750-1000 watts (i recommend you buy corsair brand)

Really? Well that's disappointing to hear. After Vista being such a RAM hog, I figured on Windows 7 being more efficient.

Your talkin about building my own rig right?? Im lookin for laptops because I need portability. But I will keep in mind what you said about ram! Now the 460 and 470 cards are Nvidia?? or ATI??

And what would I be lookin at to build a rig or laptop (if thats even possible) that could easily and smoothly run Sh5 (and many other games) with mods on top of it??

It's a misunderstanding that an efficient system leaves free RAM. After all RAM is the most efficient place to store and handle data, so part of Win7 being as efficient as it is, is it's way of using all available resources in the best possible way.

I've installed many machines with the MS recommended 4 GB and it's perfectly fine. I doubt there are any games that wouldn't run well on a Win7 with "only" 4GBs

But agreed, 6 GB is really, really good. And cheap nowadays...

With some $2500 to $3000 you should be fairly safe!

But it seems from the above posts you prefer a laptop? Then I'm blank... to be frank I've never understood why people would want a laptop for gaming
Hard to impossible to upgrade or replace parts, certainly won't last longer than a regular PC and much, much more expensive with far less performance capabilities...


Btw. if you're serious about building a rig, then perhaps we should take this to the hardware forum and it would be much better for us if we know what kind of money you have or are prepared to spend on a system.

Well I prefer a laptop because I need it because of portability (Since Ill be in the military, I dont want to get all settled in and get new orders for a new post and have to go through the trouble of setting it all up again), not to mention TDW suggested what he said was a darn good laptop to run SH5 smoothly for quite a cheaper price.

Im still not sure however, if I could build a much better system for the price of what TDW suggested I may go with getting one built (I have a friend that builds them) I mean figure Ill get paid for bootcamp (2.5 months long at about 500 every half month) and Ill get out of boot with just over $2,000 USD which Im sure would be perfect to buy whatever I want (Laptop or computer wise).

Laptops are outdated ~ 3 months after you buy it. Just the way it is with technology always on the move. A custom built system will always outperform the best laptop anyday and usually can be built for cheaper also. I have about $3k in my home system but that's because I want something that screams - when I click I don't want to have to wait for something to load. I've been building computers for over 18 years and I have to say that SSDs make any build scream. I slipped an OCZ SSD into my Qosmio laptop and it was a night and day difference. That (SSD) coupled with the Intel I7 CPU in the laptop screams - boot times are faster than my home system (2 X Raptop 150s in RAID 0). I'm waiting for the new Bulldozer core to come out from AMD then I'll be building a brand new home system. This new build is gonna rock
