(REAL LIFE TOPIC) Crew Facilites

I am reading bout the XXI and XXIII type u-boats after jimbuna mentioned the type 3.
they had better crew facilities than the other types of boat, and it has me wondering - as it's winter and it's been a real cold one this year, I know how cold the sea is, did the u-boats have any sort of insulation on-board and were they heated?

I know/acknowledge it must have been quite hot in the engine rooms but wonder if any of this heat was tranferable to the rest of the vessel?

Well I'm guessing here but I think the heat from the engines and the heat created from crew would be enough. We only need one chimney to make the whole house warm, don't we? Besides 50 men would create a lot of heat in such a closed space.

I really doubt U-boats had heaters in them but ,since I'm always wrong, I'm waiting for someone here to tell me I'm completely wrong and prove my theory once again.

I do know that the crews in the arctic froze, and the crews in the tropics roasted.

The U-boats were designed with the Baltic, North Sea, Northern Atlantic in mind. Where a good hull and a couple sweaters were all you needed to be comfy. They never really expected to be operating in tropical/polar regions. The boats were designed to blockade the British Isles, sending them to Brazil, Africa, Caribbean, Arctic, etc, just wasn't forseen.

Yes, I think the type XXI had heat, a/c and refrigeration for food storage.

Big, BIG improvements for crew comfort.
