The first comment by people in the online newspaper site, with the louisiana birds were all about the end of the world, birds using the magnetic poles for orientation and the planet poles have shifted a lot this year (yes in 5 days...)etc.

Take that with a grain of salt. They're still guessing about what happened so I'm not putting too much stock in the accuracy of these early reports.

I suppose the fireworks idea could have some merit.

There are several things of interest in different reports though.

Some say the birds were spooked from their roost by the pro type fireworks that were set off near by, ones much more powerful than the standard bottle rocket.

That caused them to take flight and other fireworks in the area kept them flying in the air and being having poor night vision (do they?) they crashed into dwellings and the like.

They were reported to have damage to their breast caused by this, other reports stated massive internal damage to their internal organs.

What bothers me about this is that none of the reports mention damage to their heads or necks. They should have this I should think, possibly some snapped neck bones. If they crashed into something they would hit their heads and necks before their breasts.

Also I don't think "massive internal damage to their internal organs" would result from flying into something, especially if no damage was noted on their beaks, heads, or necks.

Were any found in vast, open areas? If so, dwellings could not have been a factor.

I once saw a bird fly into a window. It fell to the ground dead. I assumed it snapped its neck.

Kinda waters down the fireworks thing, doesn't it?

Could be toxic summer grain (fungus or mold).

What makes me say this is that during WW2 many starving Russians died from eating corn that had been left in the field all that winter and on into the spring. Can't remember if it was fungus or mold, I read of this many years ago.

Of course at this time of year corn wouldn't apply, just a thought that perhaps some sort of summer grain planted as a cover crop could have been a factor.

I really deep down don't think this was the reason, but it sounds like a better possibility than the fireworks.

I don't think it's any creepier than fish falling out of the sky in central Australia, or bits of someone's double-wide trailer home landing in ten counties across the Eastern Seaboard after a freak storm.

Stop worrying about it. You'll probably die before the prophecies come true, anyway. Enjoy what you have now. Any true God would want that.

What speaks against intoxication via food is that one muist ask why then all the deads birds died simultaneously within a short time. Exposure to toxines only makes sense when it was a cloud of gas or popison they flew through.

And still: ornithologists say it is strange thast so many birds of these species flock togfether in one swarm outside the wandering season.

The swarm being hit by thundertstorms in midair or the birds getting smitten by hail is an often mentioned theory.
