Hello,
My computer has a problem. I think it may be the power supply. Anyway, when i turn the computer on, it starts up, but right before it gets to the windows splash screen, it turns off. Before this happened, I would get the Blue Screen randomly. Mainly if watching videos on youtube for example. After trying to turn on the cpu a few times, it will not turn on at all, untill sometime later, with above results. I have had this cpu for almost 5 years, with various upgrades, but the power supply unit is the same. Computer would stay on for days at a time, if not months. In sleep mode of course. Any Ideas? 3800 AM2 9800 GTX 2048 memory 500 watt power supply |

Replace the PSU.
I just had one die with much the same stuff going on as you posted. I slapped in a backup PSU I had and have run for nearly a week with no shut downs. While your in there? Blow or vaccum the inside of the system.. Clean the fans if they need it also. |

I have all the fans pulled out now.
![]() And yes, they were dirty, the PSU was full of gunk, sure that didn't help it. Hopefully the PSU is the culprit, fairly cheap fix. |

After pulling the PSU out, I found out that the 9800gtx had only 1 plug feeding it power instead of 2. Maybe this caused the PSU to burn up?

it may not be the PSU. And PSU doesn't come cheap. It may as well be the memory stick. But those are a lot cheaper to fix(buy).
Try playing with the RAm sticks. Pull them out and insert them one by one.

What I learned about PSUs is that they lose their wattage over time depending upon use. If I remember correctly the capacitors are the cause of the problem.

Let us know if you fix it Factor. I sort of have the same problem (but its not as bad). A PSU is about the only thing I have not ruled out. |

Well, I have pulled the PSU unit out. Going to replace it in the next day or so to see if that is the problem. Researched that a similar problem is caused by the thermal paste going bad.
I dont think this is the case because the shutdown happens just before the computer boots windows, each time. Plus it has no time to heat up. I did reinstall the PSU unit to check the RAM. After trying one stick, switching another around, then the other, same problem. I have cleaned all the fans, watercooler, the components, and the case in general and it was filthy. Hopefully the PSU will solve this one, there is only so much xbox i can take! Last edited by Factor; 12-28-10 at 12:14 AM. |

It has to be the PSU. That PSU has pushed a nvidia 7950gt, 7900gtx, & 9800gtx for the past 4 years, almost, nonstop considering patrols I would let run weeks at a time, 'real time'.

Could also be the power circuitry that feeds the processor, if your motherboard still has electrolytic capacitors you should check those, if they are bloated, if so you need to either get a new motherboard or get new capacitors soldered on.
But the PSU is usually the cuplrit in these cases. |

Well, I hope it is not the MoBo. That's not as an easy fix. I do however have about the whole computer taken apart. Gave it a very good dusting and cleaning.
So, I was shopping online for a PSU. The tower I have is a Aspire X Cruiser. So with that, I am going to go for a PSU made by Aspire. Going to get a 600w PSU this time. My old one is a NZXT 500w. http://www.google.com/products/catal...wAA#ps-sellers This PSU looks as if it was made for Aspire X Cruiser case. |

PSU's are buit to a standard, they will all fit unless you go for some oversized unti, but that particular unit should be decent.
