Default Uncontrolled Dive?

Trying to make a return trip through the straights of Gibraltar. On my approach, I was encountering frequent air patrols, one of which got the jump on me and strafed the boat, minor damage to the forward tubes, quickly repaired by the crew inside before i could even assign the damage party, but it did lower my HI to 97%.

During the actual crossing, weather was very bad, and I had a ASW trawler find me during my speed run, calling in a destroyer. I dove to my normal 150m or so (IXB), to do my normal wiggle waggle escape at 1 knot. I hit 150m, and kept going, crossing 200m. Repeated orders to maintain 150 had no results, I eventually had to order a blow, stopping at 150m. The dive resumed again. Had to blow again. I brought us up to 90m, which we were able to maintain.

I lost the patrols, resurfaced a bit later to resume my sprint, and got jumped by the destroyer again. The ensuing battle eventually killed me, and after more damage, i was unable to maintain even 70m depth.

Two questions with this then:

1) How was a I not maintaining depth with minimal damage, when in past I was able to before in previous patrols with damage? There was no flooding during the first dive.

2) Did the RN have Radar in Sep '41?

You need to remember your a WWII stealth vessel.
But you need to behave in a WWII manor.
Did the Germans know of the Radar systems?
Only the early systems probably.
The later systems they learned of as you will in Game if you don't know the true time line.
By being detected!
So if you know when different Radar and such comes into Game play?
Your ahead of the Real Crews that died learning about them.
It kind of ruins the Game for me to know when systems come online.
The pit falls of Modding.

A simple yes/no/perhaps would suffice. I'm trying to figure out if it was my tactics that killed me, or........ well it's my tactics. Bad weather, low low visibility, and they were on me from way outside of visual range. So yeah, I died figuring out they had radar, if that's what it was.

But any feed back on the dive? The tactics I can change, but failing to dive properly is a big issue I need to rectify as a commander.

PS. I thought florida was the redheaded stepchild of america?

OK,
Ohio is the Freckled Red Headed Step-Child.

At first reading of your post,
The first thought I had was:
Did you order a crash dive?
If you did,
did you try to change depth dureing the crash dive?

I think I may have. But that stops at 70m for me usually. I was at twice that and more. Every other time i have ordered a crash dive and then given a deeper depth, it leveled out at that depth.

I also did 2 emergency blows when i was getting scary deep, leveled out at my prescribed depth, then started to dive again. It was behavior like i never had seen before. It was acting like i had severe flooding.

If you order a crash dive and then change the depth before the crash dive is completed, it can cause what is known here as "The Crash Dive Blues". This will cause your boat to dive almost uncontrollably.

The thing is, your LI wants to level off the dive at whatever depth the two of you agreed on for whenever the ALAAAAAARM!!! is sounded. (This would be the default depth for a crash dive, 70 meters in GWX unless the relevant file's been edited.)

He really, really, REALLY wants to level off at that depth. This is the one routine that he just can't seem to adjust and adapt on demand.

So there he is, all set to level off at the agreed upon depth, and there you go upsetting his routine by ordering a whole different depth right in the middle of it. It ticks him off, and much muttering and grumbling ensues regarding the verdammt idiot n00b kaleun who can't make up his mind, fine, he wants to go deeper, I'll show him deeper, we'll see how he likes them apples...

BTW if anyone wants to practice uncontrolled diving learn from me. Here's a small tip. Set you're time compression to 1024 or above, get bored, go make a tea. This might not work every time but in my case the uncontrolled dive from those shell hits was quite good and fast, only "wahnsinnige fahrt voraus" somehow kept my boat long enough not to hit the sea bottom, which I hit anyway but that's my incompetence. Oh and a small tip, if by trying this you're boats frontal part (the tip with the net-cutter) gets above water ships don't really see or attack you with shells, unlike when they see periscopes, they think it's a whale of some sort.
