Default Love it! Also am heinously bad! Need help. :)

Hey all!

Fantastic game! Ive been hunting for a good sub sim as I read a few personal accounts of u-boats during WW2 and got interested in the experience.

So far, I love this game. In trying to do it "right", im going through the naval academy section. Im currently just supremely frustrated at the torpedo tutorial... I cant sink the ships before running out of torps! Inevitably, 2-3 torps bounce of their intended targets, and that "stationary" merchant that scoots on you just after you get a solution and shoot is annoying.

Was wondering if anyone had any tips, walkthroughs to help me sink those bastards....

I really love this game and want to LEARN how its done in order to enjoy everything it has to offer.

I will be honest, I use simplified targeting... the other way made my head hurt.

Any advice appreciated!

Hello Rotluchs, welcome to the forum!

Have you already installed patch 1.4b? If not, get it here:
http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php

Please make sure that you download the correct version!

The torpedos bounced off because they didn´t hit the ship at the correct angle. Read more about it here:

The torpedo tutorial ships are rigged a little bit against you: 1) they always have tremendous acceleration, and 2) if you take too long, they disappear. I thought that getting a perfect score in the tutorial was actually quite difficult, so much so that I've never bothered to finish that mission. Don't be discouraged if these ships seem tougher than they appear.

If you are so inclined, you can use the mission creator tool to make more docile ships to practise with.

Other than that, try to get as close to a 90-degree solution as you can. Learn to use the TDC to set some of the simpler torpedo settings, especially speed, depth, and trigger. Faster torpedoes will allow the target ship fewer moves to escape your attack, although their range is short. Magnetic triggers allow you to make shots other than 90 degrees, but the magnetic trigger works much better if you shoot the torpedo about 1 meter below the keel of the target.

Getting all the ships in the tutorial is quite hard, I think.
Lots of good advice given in this thread so far.
Basically if you can hit the target from the side, close to 90-degrees, set the torpedo triggger for "I" (impact). Even then the torpedo has to be set not to deep, or it will glance off the angle of the keel. It will take some practice to find the depth setting you like.

At any other angle (but also including 90-degrees) you want to set the topredo trigger for "M" (magnetic). For this to work, the torpedo has to run under the target's keel. Early in the war, this mechanism was known to fail fairly often, so much so that Admiral Donitz banned its use for a while.

Later in the war, though, this is the preferred setting, becuase you can take out a ship with 1 eel running under the middle of the boat.

Even knowing all this ... I had to play the game for some time before going back and trying to "win" the tutorial. I plannned my strategy for taking all the ships beforehand. Got them all eventually, but I still missed that pesky merchant with my first eel, even knowing beforehand what he was going to do!

Thanks for all the hints guys... ill give these things a try this afternoon!

Another question: Anyone have any useful keybinds they find helpful when fighting in a campaign? I use a nostromo n52 for the fps'er in me and was agonizing over how to set up some quick commands that may be useful. So much is on-screen button pushing that im having trouble deciding...

I've got one of those! I've got mine set up to reflect the buttons I use most often. I use the wheel for TC, and have the arrow keys, right/left/amidship rudder, F3(Scope), F5(Nav map), up scope/down scope, deck gun, flak gun, scope lock, all stop, hide gui, and GoBack camera all mapped to the first layer.

This works rather well for me, as everything else can either be accessed via the gui or sitting in the actual station.

I used to have all the speed cammands mapped to another layer, but I was getting memory dumps for some reason.

I've also edited my commands file so that all stations and camera veiws use the go back command, so I can travel all over the sub to all stations and back using the mouse and that one GoBack button.

Let us know how you get yours set up!
