Default Current State of SHV

Hi all...have not bought the game ...tho its still on the shelf at stores. My old PC (2003 HP)..finally crashed and i'm thinking of buying a PC suitable for SHV (but this would be my only reason for buying a PC...cause my new laptop does just fine. I'm a Vetern of Aces of the deep...SH2 and 3. I didnt buy SHV because I like the Uboats....and i didnt or havent bought SHV due to Ubi's inablitiy to impress me (minus graphics). I've been snooping around looking for major mods (all la NYGM or Gray Wolves for SH3) that could "fix" some of the things that peeps on this sited wanted with the release but havent found it. Soooo..my question is...what is the current state of the game with mods...and is it comparable to SH3..or better...worse? Is this just SH3 with a makeover for graphics? I've got alot of negative vives reading around...what would you do in my position? I could go out tomorrow and get the game and computer...but was a little taken back after reading the posts after the release.

Your asking the million dollar question here.

I believe SHV is worth buying considering the mods that have thus far been developed but would never promote the idea of purchasing a new system simply for a new game release.

The decision/choice is obviously yours.

Now that TheDarkWraith is going to release a megamod , why not . BTW his AI and UI are mind blowingly good .

I love all the modders, past and present. Still, I do also consider The Dark Wraith a front-runner in the modder category of the 2010 Best of SubSim awards. He will have my nomination and vote.

Understood, I guess you would consider yourself lucky to get 2800 baud access in Timbuktu.

I have bought it, installed it, and have not reinstalled it. I will wait a little longer for more mods and patches to come out.

Seems like a bit of a mixed reaction....

Ok, I see a lot of posts asking whether the modded version is better than SH3 + GWX. Maybe the better question is:

1. is SHV + Mods more 'realistic' than SH3 + Mods?

and

2. The metacritic score, as of today is 62/100. Based on this, how would you rate SHV + the popular mods out of 100.

Thanks

On the AI. I have not had much depth charge experience yet but with the IRAI mod surface wise is extremely realistic in my opinion. Depending on weather AI ships see you as they would and make evasive manoeuvres or in the case of destroyers, make for you and start firing. In SH3 I could get really close to ships without them bothering but with this AI mod they see you. Great example is scapa flow. In SH3 I remember wiggling in and out of destroyers in the harbour and no one seeing me and this was on a clear night. In SH5 i got spotted trying to do a similar thing. Gotta keep your wits about you.

IMHO the game is worth buying if found for about $20 but i wouldnt say its worth more then that.

as for the computer, hell no, its not worth buying a computer to play a game that is only ok to good but not great by a long shot so buy a computer for any reason you want but not just for this game.

Slot is piped aboard,

I bought a new PC when SH4 came out, cheapy athlon 3gingerbits some thin'or'other, sorry technoids it's all beond me, but, I never regretted it.

It now runs SH5 , just, and I love it. SH5 is a move in the right direction for me, pity about the glitches, just remember to save the game before attacking a convoy, docking at port, or going downstairs to make a cuppa tea just in case of a system crash.

10 outta 10 to Ubi for a great sim, n' like minus several million for polished quality product. But this crazy ol fool loves the whole ambience of this sim even thought the idiot cook can't make tea, maybe in SH6, heh.

Sorry if I rocked the boat (U69er) but I like it, nothin more relaxing than laying in me pit and reading a good book while SH5 does it's stuff, oh yes nearly forgot, the sea views are triffic

I have no problems so long as I keep my baking soda dry prior to launch. The water and waves are 100% realistic and what's more, there's no DRM! I have not found any convoys or task forces to attack but have had some amount of luck laying on my back and playing "ram the lighthouse".
