Default Playing with cams and contacts off

For first time in a long time and first time in TMO RSRD I'm playing a career with the map contacts off, play with cams off usually but now both.Just finished a patrol off Tsguru(sp?) straits in a Porpoise Class, May 1942.Sank three ships despite multiple torpedo failures.Tracking is more difficult but man is it fun.Early war so no escorts thus far, waiting though, sure an approach, attack and evasion/depth charging without contacts on will be interesting.

I can't bring myself to play with cams/contacts off. Not because I wouldn't enjoy the more challenging play, as I'm sure it is, but I enjoy taking SS too much and watching all the stuff that goes on above me. Almost like watching a WWII submarine flick. Besides, I get enough real life challenges as it is. I play the sim more as a way to relax and stretch back after a long trying day.

Yea but it's a blast, depth charging with cams off so you are stuck inside the boat, wondering how close the charge is, then it blows, with the EAX sound mod etc, its intense and a lot of fun.Only way to look outside being the scopes, its just a blast.

I usually play with cams off and contacts on, just bc dont have the time to play with contacts off usually.Enjoyed last couple patrols with it, ill prob alternate to keep things fresh.

I run a different smoke for merchants and warships mod by vickers, this mod gives merchants the dark, far reaching smoke puffs they had in RL, so you can track them visually from very far away as they did in RL.The smoke puffs gave merchants away to subs constantly during the war, so tracking without contacts is not as hard since can see the smoke many miles away usually.

Yah, I usually play with contacts on, now. I tried playing without it, and while immersive, it also makes patrols take a long time. I still run a patrol on occasion with them off, but it's not my usual play any more.

No doubt it can be fun tho. A lot like cams on/off. Both provide pros and cons.
With cams on, you can "see" all the stuff occur. Watch the torpedos move in, watch the big boom of the impact, etc.
With cams off, you are forced to sit there and wonder, perhaps pray a little. As stated, it's especially awesome when you can hear the depth charges going off, and have to wonder how close they are.

I did my last career with cam and contacts off, made it 4 patrols. This career cams off contacts on, so things will move a little faster. Chasing the bigger TF going faster is really a job. Try doing the battle of Guadalcanel with both off, both sides have several TF's coming in from all directions.
I bet it took me 40 hours of play over several days to do 3 days in game and I had a basic idea of what was coming.

You know what I would like, just sonar lines and get rid of the ship icons. That helps so much dived anyway and your sonarman would be giving you that info. The sonarman in game has serious trouble following nearest warships. With the lines you can use some TC so things move a lil faster.

I know the radar mod nerfs some eyecandy an screws the cam in the sub, but it's a must with C&C off.

You should really try Poul's sound mod with Eax since you enjoy being in the sub. The Silent running command really gets you in the game.

Yah, having the lines but not the ship icons would be awesome.

Also, what's this about the radar mod? Way it was explained to me, the radar mod just removed the IJN air search radar, as it wasn't relevant to the player and was bugged to pick up surface contacts in RSRD (I think, may have been another mod).

What do you mean about it messing with the cam and such?

When I was playing RFB, there were no ship icons. Unless, of course, you had a visual or when Radar became available. I had EAX installed but, I think I had it installed wrong (or something). Placed it after all the mods but, it didn't seem to work properly. That's what I'm assuming anyway because it didn't impress me, therefore I suspect that I must not have had it activated properly.

yea, I had EAX installed wrong for a long time and was not impressed.I had to change my mods around and noticed something was not right
.

Exampleownload EAX into the "downloads" folder, click the bookstack and extract here, then click the folder it creates, there will be EAX for TMO, RFB etc.Say you are using TMO, take the EAX for TMO ONLY and move it to your mods folder in SH 4.Then go to JSGME and enable EAX for TMO.You will def know if its working or not, esp when you hear explosions and gunfire.Your deck gun sounds just awseome, esp cool to hear the voices of the gun crew shouting "ready set"

Very much worth it...torpedo impacts when you doa night surface is especially cool, how the sound travels over distance.

I think he was referring to this mod.

Thanks Bubba, I'll give it another try. I guess I have to wait until I'm in home port, right?
