Default Wow what luck!

I was on patrol just west of Gibraltar in the worst fog I had ever seen when I get the ship sighted report. going to the map I found that I had just drifted into the middle of a lightly escorted large convoy!

So without further hesitation I launched a slew of torps in every direction!

79,000 tons to the bottom!

WIlhelm Klempf returned to a Knights cross!!!

AOD not SHIII

I loved fog in AotD! I would get into convoys and gun them down when I rean out of eels. If an escort happened along I merely ceased fire and changed direction. SH3 is not so forgiving, especially once radar comes along. Then, you are the hunted in fog, not the hunter. I still have a machine capable of running AotD, but with SH3 around I just can't go back to it.

How many bottles of schnapps would you require in exchange for a link?

Normally I'd post "pictures or it didn't happen" but the truth is I've never played AOD....Neal once gave me a first hand demonstration in his home office and I must say it looked pretty cool, especially when taking into consideration the age of the game.

Yea Jim it was a benchmark sim. Sierra did it right and did some extensive research before making the game with several U-boat Kaleuns brought in on the project to over see its accuracy.

Things it has that silent hunter series doesn't off the top of my head

1. Ability to sit on bottom to avoid Asdic

2.Wolf pack's, Rudel Taktic, call it what you will it has it.

3. Ability to send an SOS and hopefully you may get rescued! If you manage to slip away from battle in an unsurvivable boat.

4. Ability in rough weather to stay close to the surface to throw off asdic.

5. More realistic ability to hit convoys at night on the surface (The moon does play a part and they recommend you don't have it to your back!)

6. Damn juicy troop ships that do 28-30 knots so you can never catch them!

And the ability to get stuck in the mud and run out of air and die before you can get unstuck! Only had it happen once, but that was enough.

Hey this has probably been suggested before but after looking at some screens at Aotd, how about some one (Since it seems to be free ware now a days and we have SOOO many great modders out here) mod the game graphics and hard code so it A looks much nicer (I only am needing SH3 graphics to be completely pleased) and then allow it to run on newer computers? If it did, there would go the SH3 forever. and ever. and ever. and ever. until I needed something to burn for heat because I forgot to pay my house bills for months because I was too busy playing AotD. Just a thought

Rgr that...so I suppose the only drawback would have been the blocky pixels (not at the time of release though)

Actually wile looking for my Aces of the Deep manual in my closet of historical sims I found a pile of cd's and in that pile I found Command aces of the deep!

Installed it and set it to windows 95 compatibility mode and off she went smoothly without so much as a hickup! The graphics are higher rez and it looks worlds better!

As for getting stuck in the mud I did that getting damaged in der Kanal last night and my boat took on too much water and we settled in der mud.

After the escorts left the scene and all repairs were completed I went to blow ballast only to find that I was out of compressed air!!!

So after hours of trying to surface and no propulsion until the boat gets out of the mud my brave crew suffocated due to lack of oxygen at 200 meters depth

Dont waste compressed air until repairs are complete and all the water is pumped out of the boat...lesson learned!

Off to a new adventure!

Speaking of high speed transports: I recall one patrol in AotD where I had a troop transport approaching me and I was out of torpedoes. To approach it head on surfaced would have resulted in her altering course and leaving me in her trail. I submerged and waited until she was about 300 metres away, whereupon I surfaced and commenced to pound her with my deck gun. She soon pulled away and was threatening to get away; I was nearly out of deck gun ammo and she was several kilometres away when she finally exploded and sank.

Yea those troop transports at 28-30 knots are good at keeping you away. I just got lucky and found one submerged and it came right at me to within about 1,200 meters so I fired all three of my type II's torps and all three hit there mark! Only one exploded though with the rest being duds!

I slowed it down to a mere 22 knots and with no deck gun I watched 18,000 tons Laugh off my assault and disappear into the horizon before I could utter Verdamt!

Im loving this flashback.

Last night during a career patrol I fired a stern torpedo at a ship in the outer column. It completely missed my intended target and sailed harmlessly outside the convoy perimeter. "That's it!" I thought, then recalled that there was a wing escort not too far away. I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be nice if it hit that beggar, then I would have an open flank for my next attack. It's happened before." Then I thought, "Nah, that's a once in a lifetime fluke." A few minutes later I hear the crew cheering. Yes, it hit the escort, but did not sink it. Her wrath was aroused and she eventually got a lock on me. She pounded me with one well placed brace of charges and did a lot of damage, which made my decision for me not to pursue the convoy into shallower waters. After about half a day I finally got everything repaired [I am using the longer repair times mod, which makes the game much more realistic.]

What a game, never the same thing twice in a row!
