Ahoy there Captain Can! I'm about 2 months ahead of you having never tried Silent Hunter before, and like you I went straight in with the manual TDC (which I have to say is one of my favourite aspects). At first it was daunting but after having watched and read all the stuff I could I find I seem to have now got it down. If it's any consolation, now I can do it, it is actually much more simple than it first seemed.
I recommend you keep Map updates on until such time as you have worked out the TDC, at least then you can concentrate on the manual stuff without spending all your time actually working out where the boat is on your map.
Good Luck!

Do what I did- Just get yourself onto YouTube and watch, and watch until it makes sense. It will.

No tips on manual targeting from me as I am still relying on Mr. Triangle to help with that particular chore. But I can echo what most others have said, you've found the right place for answers to your SH3 questions.
I'm afraid I have not previously been introduced to a man going by this name. I think. Would you care to do the honours in showing me where the gentleman is?

Also from the beginning try to keep the 2 parts separate.

1: First figuring out where he is going and with what speed. (usually involves plotting)

2: Getting into position (ahead) to shoot and setting up the TDC.

Separating the 2 gives you situational awareness, and makes you prepared. Thinking "I need to shoot now" the moment you encounter the target is the wrong way to start.

Also, in addition to Paul 'Wazzoo' Wasserman's tutorial I advise you to search for Dantenoc's 3 part tutorial 'The Hunt'. (there should also be videos of it somewhere ... DUH!! ... Check the Filefront-link below)

And this thread by him:

Frankly, I'm shocked that you are unfamiliar with him, as Mr. Triangle has had one of the most long and storied military careers in history:

Personally I feel fortunate to have him on my boat and do not hesitate to confess that much of my success is due directly to his guidance and assistance.

An addendum on Herr Triangle: Back in the days of Silent Hunter II the red triangle was all we had. People struggled to make manual targetting mods, with varying (very little) success. It came to a point when we saw advanced release screenshots for SHIII and there was the triangle (though sometimes green or yellow in this case) we began to panic, and ask desparate questions. We relaxed somewhat when they assured us that the triangles would only be there in the easiest levels, and that true manual targetting would be an option.

Anyway, we used to be and hated it so much we wanted to or even , but there are stll some who want to .

Me, I just avoid it. I wish I could do so in SH4.

(appearances of Mr. Triangle snipped)

Ah yes, now I remember. I'm sorry, it was ages ago. Some time during the 1st Pacific War I had the honor of conferring with him about tactical matters. At the time his guidance didn't make much sense. However over the years his subliminal suggestions have crystallized the concept of the attack triangle in my head. Allowing me to fair much better in the Atlantic. I should be ever grateful to the man.
