Default Mod Enabler Question...

Hey all!

Got a quick question... Don't know who makes the mod enabler program so i'm hoping they read this.

Does mod enabler simply copy files from a mod into SH3's directory structure replacing what's already there?

Or does it work off a "diff" kind of deal where it finds what's different between files and applies the modification?

Yeah, that's what I'm using.

I want to use the improved U-boat mod and also some of the UnRUB stuff.

I'm moving my Silent Hunter 3 installation into a CVS so I can make updates and have them merged what's there but this is taking forEVER as the installtion is 2.7 gigs.

I don't think JSGME merges files which means that if you want to use the Map Contacts UnRUB mod, it replaces the entire contacts.cfg from Improved U-Boat with the one in the mod. So you lose all the Improved UBoat modifications to that file (And all the other files other mods edit).

If this putting this in a CVS works, I'll let you all know. This way any mod will work with any other mod. It'd be pretty nifty.

Download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework:

Why increase resolution to 1920x1200?
Because it looks great! But most display can´t handle that resolution. I use 1400x1050 with 4xAA and 8xAF.

Where do I find SH3 install directory?
If you have used the standard directory: "c:\program files\ubisoft\silenthunteriii". Or is it ubi\silenthunteriii? I don´t know, I never use the standard dirs...

RUB & UnRUB,enlighten details please.
RUb (Real UBoat) is a realism mod:
http://www.beerymod.com/sh3.htm

From the readme: "This mod fixes a number of inconsistencies in Silent Hunter III. The changes more accurately reflect the available historical data concerning U-Boat activities in WW2. The eventual goal of the patch is to accurately recreate all aspects of the U-Boat war between 1939 and 1945."

UnRUB (Unreal UBoat) is an "unmod" for RUb, you can remove RUb features if you don´t like them:

So using a CVS was a bit.... hard. I use one for work (Subversion) but it wasn't really useful for this.

SOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo.....

I found a windows GUI for the program "Diff". This is pretty cool.

I download a mod. Use the mod enabler to enable the mod. If I like what it does, I quit, uninstall the mod, then run this diff program on the mod's data directory comparing it to SH3's data directory. The program gives me a list of files that are different and then I can select what changes I want.

So I can install mods and what not on top of Improved u boat without overwriting an entire file.

There's no uninstall though....

Out of interest, which one? I used WinDiff on my previous PC, which seemed pretty good, but I haven't installed one on this PC yet. For the moment, I'm using the UNIX diff (via Cygwin).

http://www.componentsoftware.com/Products/CSDiff/

Only one I could find that would do whole directories at a time.
