Default PC Gamer Magazine... (virus alert)

My wife recently sent me a copy of PC Gamer magazine. I dont usually get this magazine but she is away on vacation and sent it to me thinking I might enjoy it.

So last night I put the dvd into the drive to see whats on it. Hrm.. a demo for Mount and Blade a driving sim and several indie titles.

Oh well its late no use in getting into something new and staying up all night.

So I fire up the virus scan and go to bed. This morning I noted the machine was still running (AV is supposed to shut down if nothing is found). I look and there is a stern warning as to a trojan virus, could not be deleted or quarintined (sp?) and had to be manually delt with. So I check the path and there it is in the indie games folder of the DVD something called Draculachacha.

Probably is a false positive though the filename crc was quite specific so just a heads up.

Hope it is a false postive for the magazines sake.

The offending filespec... Artemis!9450931E67BD

I use to read/collect
PC gamer
PC Zone
PC format
PC Plus
and
PC Powerplay.

Dont read any of them now they stopped selling PC format and PC Plus here but the others are still around.

Most likely a false positive as they would scan all files before add to their dvd. Never know though.

Hmmm, bit odd...Draculachacha is an indie game.

Not really my thing, so I doubt you're missing anything if you skip it.

I had no intentions of installing that game. I honestly forgot to remove the disk before the scan.

I just got through browsing

The program is harmless, but may be attracted to the desired material

I'm not saying the program itslef is a problem but there was that file "Artimes!" in the install kit. Probably just a poor name choice but I aint going to try to find out.

I've never had such problems when using PC Gamer discs, hopefully a one off.
You could send the disc back and let them know about it.

Funny, I'm usually the "girl" that ends up solving everybody else's PC problems hereabouts.

I once got called on to investigate a problem with the PC of one of the (male) doctors I worked for.

His complaint: after hooking up new speakers, he had no sound.

I went into his office to have a looksee while he was busy with a patient.

Results of my investigation: the speaker system was plugged into an input jack, rather than the appropriate audio output jack on the soundcard.

After that I did what any sensible girl in my situation would do - I quickly closed the door of his office, spent about 10 minutes scooting his chair around behind the desk, picking up things and putting them back down, kicking my feet against the sides of his desk, and anything else I could think of to make the desired "TECH PERSON AT WORK, DO NOT DISTURB" noises. Then I opened Media Player, found some random sound file, played it to verify my work was indeed done, and left the office.

I passed the doc in the hallway on the way back to my desk and casually told him that I'd finished "repairing" his computer.

He still thinks I'm a genius.
