Default Hi to everyone, and an odd question.

First off, Hi. I've been lurking here for a while now, and decided it's time I actually spoke up. I've just started to try manual TDC after playing for a while with auto. Using map updates though, not ready to plot for myself yet.

Now for the question. I'm using GWX and tried starting 2 careers with the 7th/13th at Konigsburg. When I get the message to return to port I head back in, and both times, got engaged by shore batteries, one near Pilau, and the other near Konigsburg. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Nope, not if you started in August 1939 and followed your "GWX orders" and used the ships in the bay for target practice.

In August 1939, the war has not yet started - nobody is anybody's enemy - everybody is a neutral. So when you attack the "target ships" GWX puts there for you, the game sees this as you attacking neutral shipping.

When you attack a neutral ship (on any date in the game), that ship's nation of origin will consider themselves "at war" with you - personally! - for the following 24 hours of game time. This is something that can't be modded around.

The "target ships" in the bay are German ships, but "neutral" by the game's reckoning, because nobody's at war with anybody yet. So when you attack them, Germany considers you an enemy for the next 24 hours. If during that time you approach within range of the weaponry at either German base, they will fire on you accordingly.

The solution is either to teleport back to base from outside the range of those weapons, or to wait 24 hours since your last attack on another vessel before you head back to base.

The idea behind all of this in GWX is that you can start a career a month before the war begins and have a practice patrol complete with ships to shoot at and sink, just to get some experience in non-combat conditions. If you start with the 7th flotilla out of Konigsberg, GWX gives you extra renown at the beginning of your career to make up for what you will lose because you sank a bunch of "neutral" ships for practice. It's just that there's no way to mod around the fact that sinking them will cause the game to make other German forces see you as an enemy for 24 hours afterwards.

That explains it then. I never considered that they'd be German ships, I saw they had red flags, and didn't look closely, then assumed them to be British. Thanks for the info.

Another option is to choose a September 1 start. You'll be at Kiel and the war will be on. Another other option is to just not sink the ships. The game doesn't care.

Thanks for this info frau. I was baffled by this GWX order to sink ships when the war hasn't even begun and thought I was missing something. It's all good now. Thanks

I just mentioned to Arctic Wolf in another thread where this came up, that I did the same thing. I had orders to sink the ships I encountered in the bay so I didn't bother to ID them, thinking they were put there for target practice so why bother?

I just assume they were German because it's the German batteries at Pillau that tried to kill me afterwards, lol.

An alternative to all that mayhem, is to use the extra money to buy a good IWO with watchman and machinist qualities, go out on patrol and leave all that stuff alone out there, wait till you get the message to return to base (on the 4th), transfer to the 2nd or 1st as ordered, buy the improved hydrophones with the remaining renown, and slowly head out to your first war patrol.
To me there is no point in wasting 1000 renown.

Yep, now if I start from there I just sail around, complete my required patrol in the assigned grid, and wait for orders to return to base. Then start my next patrol in late August with a little extra bonus for the difficult times ahead...

Decided to keep all my odd questions here.

Left Wilhelmshaven Jan 10th 1940 And I can track by contact reports a friendly task force. It heads into the North Sea, turns west, and sails to Blythe, then turns around and heads back again

Was this an historic German naval mission? I don't recall ever hearing about it

This is a 6 vessel group of the type 34 class carrying out a mining operation.

Is that the same group that was attacked by He-111s in a friendly-fire incident? One was bombed and another ran onto it's own mines? Both sank if I'm remembering rightly.

[edit] Yep, I believe that was the same group:

[edit 2] Nope, not the same group. I reread the question and answer, and these destroyers were heading from Wilhelmshaven to England, while 'mine' were off Norway.

On the night of the 10th/11th, German destroyers KARL GALSTER, ANTON SCHMIDT, RICHARD BEITZEN, FRIEDRICH IHN, escorted by destroyers WILHELM HEIDKAMP and FRIEDRICH ECKHOLDT, laid a minefield off Newcastle. On the return, IHN broke down and was escorted back by BEITZEN. On the 11th, the minefield claimed its only victim, trawler LUCIDA (251grt) in 55‑00N, 00‑53W with the loss of one crewman.
