BrewDog drew criticism last year over the launch of a 32 percent beer, which was later trumped by a German brewery that produced a 40 percent strength liquor -- BrewDog then created Sink The Bismark, at 41 percent.

I heard about this brewery a while back. Does it still qualify as a beer when it's been concentrated so much, or is it more of a whiskey?

I had an uncle who would make apple cider from his trees. He'd leave a couple barrels out to freeze in the winter, skim the ice, and repeat. Sadly, I never got a chance to taste it.

I think it's the fizzy part that makes it beer. Or else it's a very dark champagne.

Port wine is only ~20%, and it has brandy added to it.

Dunno how you get to 50% with simple fermentation, usually the trouble is the alcohol starts bumping off the critters doing the fermentation.

Nevermind, I see that they indeed use the freeze, then skim ice method.

A 110 proof beer, the world’s strongest, was launched Thursday by a British firm selling the tipple for $762 a bottle.
Your never see it on sale in pubs here, one whiff and your drunk, not a good way to make money.

I'm with the others I dont think this is tecnically actually beer.

I do believe that distilling through whatever method is not an acceptable method for producing beer / ale.

It would be more correctly classified as 'spirits'.

AFAIK that term was 'invented' to be able to sell beer above the legal limit of alchohal. It was basically strong beer but still beer/ale.

Since then the laws have been changed to cater to the craft brewery crowd.
