I've played Orbiter a little in the past, but I had problems controlling the ships and understanding what was happening.

On question: Can it be played without a joystick?

Yes, it can.

You came to the right thread. What can we help you with?

it can be played with out a joystick though it can be tricky trying to fly a space plane like the delta glider in an atmosphere and also trying to land.

In space personally I prefer keyboard for fine thruster control

Thank you for your help with those tutorials. I played the apollo 11's first phase and what a feeling it was when the music startedf playing! I don't understand anything from the game and how the scenarios and others work, although I have had time to play it only once. When I have time I'll try to familiarize myself to it.

Look inside the orbiter docs folder.
You'll find the 2010 orbiter manual, which by the way is very well done.
Read it first, and then only then start reading the other tutorials that explain more specific/specialised topics.

I payed Orbiter back in the day and enjoyed it immensely, and so did my ten year old. I think I might check out this new one, though, it looks really good!

It's definitely worth a look. A lot of the addons that weren't initially compatible with the new release have been updated, and more are still on the way. I've read that there is an effort to put a working solar sail into the simulation, too.

Whoo... finally downloaded and installed the latest Orbiter yesterday, and sat through the Delta Glider earth-to-moon demo... I'm thinking this is gonna be like learning Falcon 4 all over again

She looks beautiful though, at least once you get into space. On the ground it looks like Flight Simulator 98'

As soon as I loaded up the sim and switched to the 2D instrument panel I had a flasuback to FS2000

There's plenty of modding to do without knowing C++. The SDK is needed for any addon project as it contains the documentation for making addons. You can use Vinka's Spacecraft3 .DLL for all your animation needs and never touch a C++ compiler. Check out my addons at this website, http://www.orbithangar.com/ Do an Author search for ChristopherT. None of my addons used a custom .dll. I've been with Orbiter since before it had an autopilot!

That's going to change a bit once they get ORULEX up and running on Orbiter 2010 (it's designed for Orbiter 2006). That addon reads the surface maps of planets/asteroids/etc... and generates realistic terrains, making it possible to fly through a real canyon on the surface. See real mountain ranges, deep craters... etc... Not just textures overlayed on a ball.

Orbiter has become a REALLY addictive hobby for me.

I forgot to mention SC3.

What's the crack with Orbiter 2010 and Anti-Aliasing? Does it work?

If I'm correct it's a DX application but I force max settings through my card and I have jaggies galore, I leave it to application preference and still have jaggies, I even delve deeper into the launcher settings to enable forced AA multiplier within Orbiter itself and nothing.

I have this thing maxed graphically but the poor object AA is letting it down.

Any thoughts? ATI card in full screen mode @ 1920 x 1080.

Edit - LOL! Seems it only supports 4 x AA (at least on ATI) Fixed!
