It goes without saying that I'm completely opposed to this. I don't buy the national security argument, either, as I can't imagine what kind of cyber-attack would be more destructive or disruptive than shutting down the entire internet. The military has it's own encrypted internet, and the private users have god knows how many different encryptions and safeguards.

Perhaps the worst thing about this is that Obama's killswitch is linked directly to untold millions of adorable, captioned, kittens. Is that the kind of man we want in the highest office of the country? A man who wants to kill kittens? No, sir! No,sir it is not!

Funny how it was proposed by Lieberman. who is the "D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R"

and besides....the communications bill of 1934 sect. 706 already stated:
Quote:
SEC. 706. [47 U.S.C. 606] WAR EMERGENCY--POWERS OF PRESIDENT. (a) During the continuance of a war in which the United States is engaged, the President is authorized, if he finds it necessary for the national defense and security, to direct that such communications as in his judgment may be essential to the national defense and security shall have preference or priority with any carrier subject to this Act. He may give these directions at and for such times as he may determine, and may modify, change, suspend, or annul them and for any such purpose he is hereby authorized to issue orders directly, or through such person or persons as he designates for the purpose, or through the Commission. Any carrier complying with any such order or direction or preference or priority herein authorized shall be exempt from any and all provisions in existing law imposing civil or criminal penalties, obligations, or liabilities upon carriers by reason of giving preference or priority in compliance with such order or direction.
I think were running the risk of blaming Obama for congress being a bunch of scared old men when it comes to the internet. The president did not propose the bill...so i don't see why it's his fault. Im getting tired of every bill that comes out of Washington that somebody (usually from the GOP) dosen't agree with being called "Obama's ______ Bill". If Congress passes said bill, It's their fault alone. Hopefully Mr. Obama will give it a veto or a pocket veto. Or the Supreme court will say it's "unconstitutional". Sadly though, We are the same great nation who passed the patriot act, so it seems our government can pass any law, and the people won't much care, as long as it's wrapped thoroughly in statements of "it's for national security"

Assuming this goes through, I wonder what the "emergency" would be to shut it off? Not enough kittens have full medical coverage (around nov 2012), national crisis...must save kitties...

Break glass, flip switch.
